Watts Up San José
APRIL 2024
Happy Earth Day!
Every year, Earth Day reminds us to consider our impact on the planet we call home. With events like trash clean ups and tree plantings, many of us volunteer to give our time and energy to make a difference. But it doesn’t have to be just once a year. Bring that spirit of caring for the planet into everyday life with some ideas for actions that can make an impact.
We'll Pay You to Save Energy
Save money and energy with Peak Rewards! Our expanded demand response program pays customers to use less energy during peak times to reduce strain on the electric grid. Starting this summer, we’ll call events depending on demand on the grid and you can get paid for using less energy during those time periods, usually in the afternoon or evening.
YOU'VE GOT GREAT ENERGY, SAN JOSE!
San José is celebrating five years of service to our community. With your help and support, we’ve contracted for one gigawatt of renewable energy and kept 5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from polluting our air. We’ve also saved SJ Cares customers $6 million and committed $38 million dollars back to our community.
WE'RE HELPING YOU SAVE ON BILLS
We’re so grateful to our community for the opportunity to serve up the lowest electricity rates available in our city. The average customer is saving about 8% on electricity, compared to PG&E. As your local not-for-profit electricity provider and a department of the City of San José, it’s our mission to keep clean electricity as accessible as possible. We’re also committing money back into our community with discounts on energy efficient appliances, bill relief for our hardest hit neighbors, and programs that help secure our grid to keep the power on at critical times.
IT'S AWARDS SEASON FOR SJCE!
We recently won a CalCCA Community Impact Award for our work with you! CalCCA is the industry organization for California’s 25 community choice aggregators (CCAs). The awards honor innovative initiatives that are reducing carbon emissions and promoting equity. Our EV Outreach & Education Pilot, which engaged over 700 residents at EV-focused events like ride and drives and community dinners, won in the Marketing & Outreach category.

We were also excited to join our community partners Silicon Valley Youth Climate Action, Breathe California of the Bay Area, and Rising Sun Center for Opportunity as they were recognized at San José’s 2024 Climate Smart Champions Awards! Congratulations on your inspiring work!
