Make Halloween Safe, Keep Halloween Fun
|
|
Halloween 2020 will truly be one to remember. Much has changed… but our love for the fun, fright, and delight of Halloween is strong as ever. We are calling on young people to save Halloween by celebrating in safe, fun, and unexpected ways, all while helping people in need.
YSA is activating our national network of partners to ask teens to help keep it fun for younger children; and on all young people to bring the fun of Halloween to neighbors in their community. Find ideas and resources at YSA.org/Halloween.
Youth-led celebrations might include virtual contests, donations to local organizations that serve others, decorating homes of vulnerable neighbors, and safe, in-person trick-or-treating or alternative events.
These celebrations can help keep Halloween fun and safe for younger children, families in need, senior citizens, military families, healthcare and essential workers, and others.
Schools, youth development organizations, afterschool programs, and nonprofits in the United States can apply for a Party Pack of Hershey candy, costumes, and decorations through Thursday, October 22 at 1:00pm Eastern. Up to 50 youth-led celebrations will be awarded these party packs.

Everyday Young Hero: Gabrielle Latimore
|
Passionate about sustainability and urban development, Gabrielle ‘Gabby’ Latimore (17 | Irvine, California) is working to make communities more environmentally and health friendly. Researching the psychological impact of green vegetation and city development on the wellbeing of residents, Gabby found that by 2050, half of the global population will be living in cities and urban areas. To alleviate the environmental strain this will cause, cities and companies need to be redesigned to incorporate sustainable urbanism; a successful society tackles multiple aspects of sustainability, and as such, forms plans for infrastructure, green architectural design, and economic soundness.
As a means of informing people about her findings, proposing design solutions, and advocating for sustainability within cities, Gabby created Project Life on Earth (PLOE) in 2019. This student-led environmental organization has already launched a number of successful initiatives through collaborations with business owners and community organizations. In partnership with United States Green Building Council, Gabby is developing a K-12 program to teach students about the science behind sustainable communities and connecting high school students with professionals in green engineering and related roles. After presenting about sustainable practices to the Irvine Chamber of Commerce, PLOE learned that many small businesses in attendance began making more sustainable swaps including the use of more durable, versatile, and safe plastics over their single-use counterparts; and incorporation of eco-friendly materials in their building renovations!

"We Americans" - The Avett Brothers
|
"And accountability is hard to impose
On ghosts of ancestors haunting
the halls of our conscience
But the path of grace and good will is still here
For those of us who may be
considered among the living
I am a son of God and man
And I may never understand
The good and evil
But I dearly love this land
Because of and in spite
Of we the people
We are more than the sum of our parts
All these broken bones and broken hearts."
