August 2021
Hi Friends!

Emil here, Shumla's Development Coordinator and former President of the Shumla Board of Directors. Jessica is on vacation this week and I am stepping in to share some exciting news.

First, I hope you saw our recent announcement that we will be opening a new Shumla office in San Marcos. We're excited to further our partnership with Texas State University and welcome more students to work and learn with us. To spearhead opening the new office, I will be moving to San Marcos. In fact, I just arrived a few days ago and am getting familiar with new places to get great Tex-Mex. After many years in the DC area, I am looking forward to returning to Texas for a new adventure!
The other exciting news this month is the formation of our Shumla Legacy Endowment and the Shumla Legacy Society. All strong non-profit organizations with long-term plans for the future build endowments as a foundation for success. It has been a goal of mine since joining the organization as a Board Member back in 2010 to facilitate planned giving to Shumla that would build a foundational endowment. Now, as the Development Coordinator, and in collaboration with the Board Development Committee, I have drafted the policies and created the processes to allow anyone to make their mark through a planned gift to Shumla.

Read on to learn more!

Best wishes from all of us at Shumla,
Emil Zuberbueler

MAKE YOUR MARK
Preserve the ancient legacy of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands through a legacy gift to Shumla.

For generations, native people left their mark on the Lower Pecos Canyonlands. Shumla works to preserve and learn from the images they created. Through Shumla’s Legacy Giving Program, you can make your mark to preserve the unique and irreplaceable murals for generations to come.

Legacy gifts can be made in many ways. They are a simple, flexible way to provide future support to Shumla at no cost to you now.

The most common ways to leave a legacy are to make Shumla full or partial beneficiary of your:
• Will or bequest
• Individual Retirement Account (IRA)
• Savings or Checking Account
• Life Insurance Policy
• Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds

When you make a legacy gift to Shumla you become a member of the Shumla Legacy Society and receive unique privileges and benefits. Check out our new Leave a Legacy webpage with FAQs and easy how-to's.
Be sure to tell us if you have already considered Shumla in your will or other planned giving. We'll add you as a member of the Shumla Legacy Society!
SEE THE ART FOR YOURSELF
Like a book, each panel was painted to tell a story. Come read a chapter for yourself!
Descend into the picturesque canyons with a Shumla guide to view ancient sites. You’ll stand before the murals and learn about the complex worldview and fantastically rich culture of the people who created them.

Our treks are outdoors and when indoors, we wear masks. The border is a very large place. It is safe where we lead Treks. We are in close communication with border patrol and always carry safety equipment including an AED.
