In the Jewish tradition, the sabbath is represented by the image of Shekinah, the divine presence, the shabbat bride, the female aspect of God, present with you. Again, if you don't believe in a higher power, don't let that stop you from enjoying the day, or the moment, and feeling something beyond the norm.
Make Your Own Way
If you are making your own way, then it is as simple as deciding that you will spend your time off, your sabbath (or whatever you want to call it), either not doing anything (a very challenging thing to do) or doing anything that gives you a sense of joy and peaceful freedom.
Choose and then make the effort to stick to the choice you have made. That is where discipline comes into play to resist the pull of responsibilities and the need for something more exciting to do to distract you. Your effort becomes effortless as you celebrate the time you have set aside for retreating from the world into a special 'space' to remind you that your daily reality is not all there is.
What If a Day is Too long?
What if a day is too long because you need to work five days and take care of personal chores like the laundry, shopping, and socializing. In that case you can carve out any amount of time on any day of the week to devote to anything that works for you.
If you intentionally step out of the daily flow, for even a single moment, to devote the moment to just being present, you are making that moment count. Then you can reenter the flow refreshed and refueled.
