MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

February 24, 2025

The consistent flow of manufacturers looking to expand or grow here in Delaware has been going on long enough now to be accurately called a trend. While many of the names are not consumer brands or ones you might otherwise recognize, what they contribute to our economy is significant, and who they employ is really important. More manufacturers are headed our way, and we need to remediate properties that could serve as a landing place for these operations (brownfields) and improve other locations with the infrastructure needed to make them “site ready” for development.

To highlight our growing manufacturing sector, we’re hosting the Second Annual Coolest Thing Made in Delaware competition! Voting in the popular vote round is open until Thursday, so take a moment to check out the products and companies competing to make it into the bracket portion of the competition. You're able to vote once per product per day.

Our goal is to hear people say, “I didn’t know that was made in Delaware!” Thousands of votes have already been cast by Delawareans across the state, so join the fun and encourage family, friends, and colleagues to vote too! Cast your vote >

News You Can Use

Significant economic news for the week kicks off tomorrow with February consumer confidence numbers, the December S&P Case-Shiller home price index, and remarks by Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr. Wednesday brings us January data for new home sales, while on Thursday we’ll see durable goods orders results for January, and January pending home sales. Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker is also scheduled to make remarks Thursday afternoon. We wrap up on Friday with personal income numbers from January and advanced retail inventory data from January.

Fresh Del Monte, Owens Corning, Cleveland Cliffs, Public Storage, Quaker Chemical, Topgolf Callaway Brands, and others host earnings calls today. Home Depot, Instacart, and Boston Beer headline the Tuesday calls, and are joined by Harmony Biosciences, International Gaming Technology, LGI Homes, Planet Fitness, Portillo’s, and several others. Wednesday’s full lineup is kicked off by Agilent Technologies, Nvidia, Dole, Federal Signal, Janus International Group, Lowe’s, and Steven Madden, to name a few. Good Rx, Hormel Foods, International Seaways, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Warby Parker, Bloom Energy, Elastic, and Redfin are among a long list of calls later in the week.

Investing in Innovation: How Delaware Compares

Delaware’s commitment to manufacturing investment is evident in its strong per-employee manufacturing spending, ranking 8th in the nation. When comparing our tiny state—in geography and population—our spending per capita in areas like venture capital and research and development, both of which can play a large role in the manufacturing sector, places us alongside giants like California, New York, and Massachusetts, who have long invested in the startup and innovation economy. By investing in industries like aerospace, biopharmaceuticals, high-tech manufacturing, and more, Delaware can strengthen both its talent pipeline and economy.

This data, along with additional insights on how Delaware compares nationally, can be found in our Delaware Competitiveness Bluebook. If you’d like to learn more, we invite you to request your free copy by emailing rdonato@dscc.com.
