If you plan to put up a fence, build a deck, replace underground pipes, or plant a garden, first ask your local utilities to check for underground lines, such as water, electricity, or cable TV. If you don’t know where these lines are, your digging may disrupt services to surrounding neighborhoods or you could hurt yourself or others. A utility company can also impose fines and make you pay any repair costs.
The depth of utility lines varies and there may be multiple lines running through your property. Call several days before you begin digging; this will give each affected company time to come to your home and mark the approximate location of their underground utility lines.
