It took me a long time to come to birdwatching, and once I did, I wondered “where has this been all my life?” Birdwatching is rewarding! It can be both exciting and soothing and it’s easy to lose yourself in learning about the behaviors of different birds. There are so many incredible birds on the Treasure Coast!

Birdwatching is certainly one of those hobbies you can learn about as you go, but you’ll see more birds sooner with a little guidance. By following just a few tips for how to make your yard a hot spot for bird visitors, they will start to show up and when they do, any window will become your first stop of the day!

Here are our best tips for creating a place for birds because keeping them coming does require more than adding a bird feeder to your backyard.

  1. Plants provide a place to roost, a place to nest, and food. It’s important to have plants so that birds can think about moving in.
  2. When planting, create natural curves instead of straight lines. They’re drawn to the wild look of your garden. It offers them places to explore and hiding spots.
  3. The more diverse the garden, the more diversity you will see in birds. Bring them all!
  4. Water is a universal attractor. We all need it. Birds are attracted to water for drinking but they also look for the movement and listen for the sound. Add a pump or just a hose with a drip into your birdbath. Keep the water feature low and shallow, consider a rock shelf for birds to rest on if you already have a fountain.

Bottlebrush trees are popular for their ability to attract and sustain bird populations in gardens. The color and texture are awesome additions, too! Bottlebrush trees produce striking, cylindrical flower spikes that are nectar rich. We see hummingbirds stopping by them often!
Wild Coffee is a pretty Florida native with dense glossy foliage. It produces small, berry-like fruits. Wild Coffee’s fruits and foliage attract an array of bird species. Birds that feed on Wild Coffee’s fruits play a critical role in seed dispersal. After consuming the fruits, birds disperse the seeds through their droppings, helping to propagate the plant and promote its growth in new areas. It is very easy to grow and is tolerant of a variety of conditions.
Birds also like to visit Jamaican Caper, Fire Spike (we have purple and red), Podocarpus, Firebush, Shrimp Plant, Cocoplum, Necklace Pod, and many more! You can create a beautiful, diverse garden that will keep birds coming and going. You'll be entertained! If you want to know more, ask us. We have become experts just watching what birds do when they're wandering the garden center!

Petunias have big, bold, beautiful blooms that add something fabulous to any space. See how good they look in the garden? If you're not already a fan, the most important thing to know is that whether they are cascading from hanging baskets, lining garden borders, or making picture-perfect containers, Petunias effortlessly enhance any space! The stunning blooms will bring a big burst of color and the fragrance is exquisite. They have fun names like Moon Walk and Violet Vogue. Petunias thrive in our warm climate and bright sunlight. They are resilient and low-maintenance flowers that not only withstand the heat but also provide continuous blooms! Ian is growing so many colors so no matter what your garden style is, there is a Petunia that will fit in perfectly. We carry these in our 4 1/2" Suddenly Splendor pots making them easy to love and easy to plant!
