The Life You've Built is Worth Protecting -

Make a Plan, Build a Kit, and Be Informed

National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness around the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. We encourage everyone to take some time to prepare themselves, their families, their homes - and ultimately our community.

We’ve collected some resources below for you to share with your family and neighbors so we can all work toward a more resilient Albemarle County.

And, if you haven't already, sign up for CodeRED. This emergency alert system will keep you aware of potential emergencies in our area.

Have and Know a Plan

We all know that disasters can happen anywhere, at any time. That’s why it’s important to have a plan established and discussed with your family. How to contact one another if you’re not together, understanding evacuation routes, and knowing which types of disasters are likely for our area are all good conversation starting points.

Be sure to tailor your plans for your family’s needs and responsibilities, and don’t forget how people in your network can help one another.

Resources to develop your plan can be found here.

Disasters can leave children and teens feeling frightened, confused, and insecure. Their responses can be quite varied. It's important to not only recognize these reactions but also help children cope with their emotions.

Disability intersects every demographic group—there are people with disabilities of all ages, races, genders, or national origin. And, disabilities can impact a person in a variety of ways—both visible and invisible. For people with disabilities and their families, it is important to consider individual circumstances and needs to effectively prepare for emergencies and disasters.

Aging is a natural part of life that comes with changes in lifestyle. For older adults, emergency preparedness may include considerations for mobility, medications, living alone, and access to medical equipment.

Build Your Emergency Kit

An emergency kit should have everything you need to survive for several days. Keeping your kit stocked with necessities like food, water, and medical care can make a huge difference in the event of an emergency.

Be sure to consider the unique needs of your family by including supplies needed by pets, older adults, and those with disabilities.
