Growing Our Faith

A Bible Reading - 1st Week in Lent

At once the same Spirit pushed Jesus out into the wild. For forty wilderness days and night he was tested by Satan. Wild animals were his companions, and angels took care of him.

Mark 1:12-13 (The Message translantion)

Yes during Lent we read that Jesus is tested by forces given a name, Satan. We learn he was alone in a wilderness for 40 days.

This is why Lent lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays.

How shall we grow our faith during this season called Lent?

Let us begin by thinking about what we know about words in this Bible reading:

  • Wilderness - as Being Alone
  • Do you ever feel lonely?
  • Do you think Jesus might have felt lonely in the wilderness?

What about the words "being tested"? In the wilderness Jesus was tested? Not like the test in this story. Watch the story and then we can think together about how Jesus won his contest with the powers that were testing him.

Jesus was tested and he left the wilderness, he started to teach a lesson about how people should live together. Jesus taught that we should treat others the way we want to be treated.

Snail helped the other animals see that because they did this together, they became Best Friends.

Prayer:

Dear God during these 40 days of Lent, I hope I will take time to be alone to think about Jesus alone for 40 days. I want to think about how he was tested but knew that he was to leave the wilderness and go teach people that God is love. He taught us to treat others the way we want to be treated. I want to practice this every day. Amen

All the Light

Mark Twain said that “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

Given current circumstances, in our nation and around the world, well we might wonder if Twain was right.  There’s an all-too-familiar darkness that hovers over us and too easily infiltrates our lives.  Is there light, either at the end of the tunnel, or possibly to be discovered along the way?

Author Anthony Doerr’s novel, “All the Light We Cannot See,” speaks to this.  I invite you to read (or re-read) the book and join me at the JRC for a discussion of it on the following dates during Lent:

Friday, Feb. 27

    “    March 13

    “    March 20

    “    March 27

Hope to see you there!

Devotional for Lent

It's About Perfection: Sometimes We Think Lent Might Be the Time to "Work or Pray" our way to Perfection.

I rather like Mary Luti's suggestion for Lent.

Perfect Eggs

by Mary Luti

February 11, 2026

[Jesus taught them, saying:] “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of [God]. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even tax collectors do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” - Matthew 5:44-48, abridged (NRSV)

If you’re spending half your paycheck on eggs these days, you might as well prepare them to perfection. Luckily, scientists have hit on the recipe for achieving that perfection. It takes just 32 minutes:

Put your eggs in a steamer basket, then transfer them every 2 minutes between a bowl of boiling water and a bowl of lukewarm water (86°F) until 32 minutes have elapsed. It’s called “periodic cooking,” and it yields a velvety yolk and a meaty-but-soft white. A perfect egg.

A perfect 32-minute egg.

Perfection is so overrated.

I wish Jesus had never commanded perfection as perfect as God’s. Too many religious people have actually set out to achieve it, only to end up inflicting their achievement on the rest of us, demanding, judging, disapproving, condemning. They’re intent on other people being perfect not as God is, but as they think they are.

Pursuing perfection is often just pursuing yourself. It’s hard to imagine that Jesus intended us to spend our lives in self-improvement projects, much less in keeping insufferable vigils over other people’s lives.

Best to ignore that last line. Perfection’s a trap, and it’s not really achievable, anyway. So why not work on the “love your enemies” part instead? It’s probably not achievable, either, but if you have 32 spare minutes, at least it’s a worthy use of your time.

Prayer

I don’t ask you to make me perfect, Jesus, although my pride would be happy to help you do it. But if your point is that we should become like God, then make me loving. Even to my enemies.
