THE BLAST

THE LATEST NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM

WALLKILL PUBLIC LIBRARY

January 20, 2023

Make a Valentine for a senior!

You can make someone’s day a little brighter with the library’s next Grab & Go project.

Starting Friday, January 27, you can pick up a Valentine Card Kit for Hudson Valley Seniors. Bring the kit home, design your card, and write a special message inside. The cards will be delivered to residents of the Montgomery Nursing Home and Campbell Hall Rehabilitation Center.

In order for the cards to get to the facilities in a timely fashion, they should be returned to the library by February 10. Instructions as well as all supplies will be included in the card kit. Sign up now via our online calendar!

Thanks to patron Jamie Meinsen for reaching out about this, and for delivering the finished products to the nursing home residents!

Seniors looking for new members!

If you’re looking for a fun and informative outlet in which to socialize, the Wallkill Community Senior Citizens Club may be your answer!

The group meets each Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the community room of Town Hall. Speakers and programming are often featured at their meetings. Christine Adams recently offered a beaded snowflake craft program to the group and is going to line up additional programming for February and March.

If you’d like more information or are interested in joining, either come to a meeting or call Carmel Belles at 845-851-8350.

OverDrive app soon to sunset

The OverDrive app used to download the library’s digital material will be discontinued as of the end of April, but the good news is there’s a newer, user-friendly app that you can download now to take its place!

The Libby app is free and will allow you to browse and enjoy all that’s downloadable from Wallkill’s OverDrive collection. Once you download the app, simply find your home library and sign in. Your loans, wish list items, and holds will be visible on your Shelf. As always, if you run into problems, call our circulation desk at 845-895-3707, or stop in so we can help you!

Resources to help you make the transition from Overdrive to Libby:

Libby help: How-to videos and step-by-step instructions on Libby Help explain how to use the app.

Overview page about the transition to Libby: This informational page for users includes an overview about the sunset, FAQs, and training opportunities.

Virtual training: Users can sign up for a virtual training session hosted by team OverDrive.

Options for Kindle Fire devices: Amazon has not yet accepted submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore so the OverDrive app will remain available for Kindle Fire users to download and access until further notice. Users with Kindle Fire devices can also sideload Libby manually following these steps.

Amazon ditches Smile program

AmazonSmile will be discontinued toward the end of February, according to news reports.

The Wallkill Public Library is among the organizations that benefitted from the charity, which allowed shoppers to donate a 0.5% of eligible purchases to the nonprofit of their choice. Amazon said the reasoning behind the discontinuation was not to save money, but because the charity didn’t have a powerful enough impact.

The library will remain one of Smile’s charitable organizations until the program is discontinued. If you’d like to shop at AmazonSmile and donate a portion of your purchase costs to Wallkill, visit smile.amazon.com  on your computer, or activate AmazonSmile on the Amazon Shopping app on your smartphone.

MYO greeting cards

This week’s MYO card kits were designed using discarded book pages cut to mimic birch trees. They were embellished with cardinal stickers and a "Warm Winter Wishes" sentiment.

Felted peace banners

A day off for Martin Luther King Day brought a few patrons out for needle-felted peace banners.

Pyromania strikes the library!

Programming has been HOT the last several weeks and brought patrons out of the woodwork to answer the burning question, "What is pyrography?"

Some brought wood to work on and others chose pieces from our box of projects... including spoons, game pieces and frames.

Wood burning is on the calendar for Friday, February 10 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, February 15 at 6:30 p.m. Space is limited and registration is required. Ages 10+.
