Somber Sounds

Lebanon High School's spring concert at the Opera House, the program featured "Love and Light." Baltimore-based composer Brian Balmages wrote the cacophonous piece in memory of a still-born child. Students also performed the lyrical "Into the Silent Land" by New England composer Steve Danyew. He attended Sandy Hook Elementary School and dedicated the work to its students and families. Creepy Crawler Advice

"Ticks can feed on anything," Dartmouth PhD student Joseph Savage told listeners at Suds & Science. "They're sneaky, and they find a way. I tuck my pants into my socks anytime I'm going to be outside," said Savage. Do tick checks of pants, armpits, groins, and backs of knees. Wash clothes promptly, then put them in the dryer whose high temps kill them. Check out all five new episodes of Suds & Science, produced by JAM for the VT Center for Ecostudies through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

What Our Heart Desires

That was the theme of the eighth annual Hartland Poetry Fest held at the Hartland Library. Participating poets included Laura Jean Gilloux of Wilder; Hatsy McGraw of Hartland; April Ossmann of White River; Ivy T. Schweitzer of Norwich; and Vermonter Diana Whitney. "Love shall always be light and light, but hate is heavy, bright with spite," said Schweitzer.

Produced by JAM's Richard Neugass and Rick Russell
