What is the Effect of Tariffs on Your Business?

At World Trade Center Delaware, we understand that businesses are facing challenges in navigating the complexities of the new regulatory landscape. To better assist you, we want to understand how the already announced and potential changes in tariffs are affecting your business.

Based on U.S. trade statistics for Delaware's imports and exports, we have prepared a short survey—adapted from questions developed by World Trade Center Utah—to help us assist you.

Take the Survey

The survey will remain open through March 3rd, and your input will be invaluable in helping Delaware companies successfully adapt to this evolving environment.

Thank you for your support in this important matter.

PRESIDENT'S NOTES

World Trade Centers® Association Connections are More Important than Ever

Dear Colleagues,

Each day brings news of changes in U.S. international trade policy and personnel at the agencies most involved with international trade. We held a confidential listening session this week during which no person or affiliation was identified. We learned that companies’ foreign partners have expressed apprehension about the reliability of U.S. companies as suppliers because so many U.S. products are made with imported components. Participants told us that price is less a concern than reliability across the entire supply chain. We are working with our partners across the world to identify stumbling blocks to two-way trade and investment that changes in tariffs might pose.

WTC Delaware is trying to estimate the effect on Delaware companies and the number of jobs that may be affected. We have developed a survey (building on one from WTC Utah) for Delaware companies, large and small across all categories, including agricultural as well as manufactured products. This survey will identify your main concerns and measure the potential impact of tariffs.

Every company should complete the survey even if it does not export or import products directly. Your company may be an indirect exporter by supplying parts to manufacturers or companies that sell finished goods overseas directly. Indirect importers may purchase products for use in manufacturing or wholesale or retail sales. Your survey answers will help us provide the resources you need to adjust to the changing trade landscape.

Let me know if you need more information. We are planning additional off-the-record listening sessions across the state. Tell us if you would like to participate.

Thank you for your cooperation during this challenging time for companies in Delaware. We are here to assist you.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Historic Journey to Nigeria:

Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce's Visit

The Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Afridu, traveled to Nigeria from October 17 to 27, 2024. The purpose was to start the Reparations Justice Initiative, offering dual citizenship to African Americans with Nigerian ancestry. This program aims to strengthen cultural and economic ties between the African diaspora and the continent.

Participants met with Nigerian leaders, including Sen. Prince Ned Nwoko, chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation. Senator Nwoko emphasized the importance of reparations and repatriation for descendants of Nigerians and introduced a bill for diaspora voting.

The delegation attended the Global Africa Economic Investment Summit, which focused on opportunities between Africa and the diaspora, and the Badagry Door of Return Festival, a symbolic event for the African diaspora's return to its ancestral homeland.

A highlight of the journey was Ayanna Khan, president and CEO of the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce and member of the World Trade Center Delaware board of directors, receiving a chieftaincy title from the king of Imo State. She was honored as Queen Mmiri Aku, meaning "River of Wealth," for her leadership connecting Africa and the African diaspora.

The trip solidified the Reparations Justice Initiative's impact, helping African Americans reconnect with their roots. With continued collaboration, the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce and Afridu are building a brighter future for African American-Nigerian relations, focusing on economic, cultural and political partnerships.

A Day at Delaware Legislative Hall:

Gaining Insight into State Governance

By WTC Delaware Intern Harin Lee

On January 14, 2025, I had the valuable opportunity to visit the Delaware Legislative Hall in Dover and observe a Legislative Session in action. This experience deepened my understanding of governance and decision-making at the state level.

The session was particularly significant as it marked the opening of the 153rd General Assembly, during which Representative Melissa Minor-Brown was elected Speaker of the House. I found it especially insightful to witness newly elected legislators taking their seats after the recent elections, signaling the start of a new legislative cycle.

This visit was more than just an educational opportunity—it was an experience that broadened my perspective on the state and its governance. Events like these highlight the importance of active participation in our communities, fostering connections, and embracing the processes that shape our society.

The visit to the Delaware Legislative Hall served as a reminder of the importance of engaging in local governance, understanding the legislative process, and appreciating the institutions that drive change. It strengthened my connection to Delaware and deepened my appreciation for the role each individual plays in shaping the future.

A First-Hand Experience of Delaware's Inauguration: Embracing Civic Engagement

By WTC Delaware Intern Harin Lee

On January 21, I witnessed the inauguration of Matt Meyer and Kyle Evans Gay as the 76th Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Delaware, respectively, at Delaware State University in Dover. Despite the early morning chill, the event drew a large crowd, highlighting the community’s strong engagement with the state’s political processes.

In their speeches after taking the oath of office, Governor Meyer and Lieutenant Governor Gay both emphasized their shared goal of improving the quality of life for all Delawareans. This was my first time attending an inauguration, and it offered me a unique opportunity to witness Delaware’s commitment to progress and the active involvement of its people in shaping the state’s future. I could truly feel the importance of civic engagement and leadership in addressing key issues for Delaware’s future.

This experience not only deepened my understanding of Delaware’s governance but also reinforced the significance of community involvement in the political process. Participating in such meaningful events fosters a stronger connection to the state and underscores the role each individual plays in contributing to societal progress. While I had previously viewed politics as difficult and complex, this experience made me realize that it is much closer and more accessible than I had imagined.

Chocolate & Beer Event

Wednesday, February 19 was our seventh annual Tastes of Chocolate and Beer from Around the World. This popular event is held at Midnight Oil Brewing in Pencader, across the street from United Cocoa Processors, our member sponsor and featuring the specially chosen pairings from Sweet Dreams Confections of Delaware in Middletown and Midnight Oil’s best beers. After learning about the chocolate supply chain from cocoa bean to confection and how beer is made, we sampled the chocolate and beer pairings and ate a buffet dinner. Some people return year after year to see what’s new. Be on the lookout for next year’s edition around Valentine’s Day.

WTC Delaware Kickoff to the

US-Africa Business Summit May 8

WTC Delaware presents Kickoff to the US-Africa Business Summit. Organized by the Corporate Council on Africa, this year’s summit will take place in Luanda, Angola, from June 23 to 27. Again this year, World Trade Center Delaware will be an exhibitor. The summit is an important forum for U.S. and African corporate, government and NGO leaders. WTC Delaware’s long record with the council and summit gives our companies a head start to explore or solidify market opportunities. Companies that attend with us succeed in a region where relationships are especially important.

Angola is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest economies and the United States’ third-largest trading partner in the region. It is a thriving emerging market and home to many multinational U.S. organizations. It has strengthened ties with the United States through a trade and investment framework agreement aimed at fostering greater trade and investment. Angola’s economy is overwhelmingly driven by its oil sector. Oil production and its supporting activities contribute about 50 percent of GDP, more than 70 percent of government revenue, and more than 90 percent of the country’s exports. Production has surpassed that of Nigeria, making it the largest oil producer in sub-Saharan Africa. Food products, machinery and chemical products were the main categories of U.S. exports to Angola in 2022. Angola is a large market for U.S. goods and services, leading with agricultural products and technology, oil and energy, healthcare, aviation and rail, and marine (fisheries and sea ports).* trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/angola-market-overview

This year's summit will bring together more than 1,500 delegates, including African presidents, heads of government and ministers, senior U.S. government officials and leaders from U.S. and African companies. The 2025 summit sessions will cover an array of opportunities to expand U.S.-Africa trade, investment and business relations.
