A Note from our Executive Director

Dear friend,

Summer is my favorite season. My childhood memories of summer include building sand castles at the beach, family vacations at Lake Tahoe, having time to climb trees, ride my bike around the neighborhood, and re-read my favorite Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

Having time to play and relax is important for all of us, and especially for children. Our Children’s Center curriculum is play-based, because for children play is learning. We hear so much about learning loss as a result of the pandemic – but what about play loss? It’s important that we encourage our children of any age to take some time for play. In fact, I encourage each of us to find time for play this month.

I wish you a joyous, and relaxing summer.

Building Resilience in Children

Building resilience in children and families is at the core of IVYP's work this article clearly articulates why resilience is so important for young children and strategies to help caregivers provide consistent support even in times of challenge.

"Young children rely on interactions with beloved caregivers to develop a fundamental sense of self...Over time, sensitive, reliable responses by a caregiver give a young child a model for how to respond to and manage emotions."
Staff Spotlight - Christina Castaneda

"What I love the most about my job is the children and getting to see them grow and evolve from all the different ages."

Harvest of the Month

Each month we share a healthy, easy and affordable recipe to try that highlights ingredients you can get at our food distribution and weekly farm stand. This month we are highlighting plums! Plums are an extremely nutritious fruit, with a variety of health benefits to offer. Plums are a good source of fiber and have been shown to benefit blood sugar control. We love this recipe for a plum crumble because it's a delicious and healthy summer treat that everyone will enjoy!

IVYP needs your support as we work hard to support our community in the wake of COVID-19. We’ve stepped up and we need your help to continue. Please consider a donation to IVYP’s COVID-19 Response Fund to help us continue to provide the caring, proactive and flexible support our community needs.
Be a diaper champion by sponsoring the cost of diapers for local families. Diapers are one of the most consistent requests from our families at our FRC. Disposable diapers can cost as much as $100 per month per baby so every contribution makes a big difference.
