October 2025

This month we are busy getting ready for the Halloween Parade, so excuse our mess if we are making anything in the MakerSpace while you are here. We will still have some fun Halloween themed classes this month. At Defiance we are hosting spooky cross stitch on October 6th. Then at Sherwood we will be making our own ghost friends at the Adopt a Ghost class on October 13th.

MakerSpace Spotlight

Bambu Carbon X1

One of our most popular pieces of equipment is the 3D printer. Our newest printer, the Bambu Carbon, is higher quality and can print up to 4 different colors. You can print a variety of things, including replacement parts, trinkets, and useful tools. Most of our filament is PLA, but we also offer a carbon fiber-infused filament for stronger prints and TPU, which is flexible. Prints are not food safe and can warp or melt if left in high heat, so not all applications work for plastic 3D prints.

A variety of colors are available while supplies last and are subject to change. Currently, we have some special filaments, including clear, blue/green multichrome, and green glow-in-the-dark.

You can design your own prints at tinkercad.com or find files at thingiverse.com and makerworld.com. Prints do take a while, especially in multicolor prints, so there may be a queue of prints. You can bring in prints, pick them out in the MakerSpace or email them to cbolley@defiancelibrary.org.

Contact the MakerSpace for 1-on-1 help and questions about our 3D printers. The printers are available to use on a first-come, first-served basis during open make times or by appointment.

AI Tool for Spooky Action

Using an AI tool, scientists have been able to quantumly entangle subatomic particles easier than before. Quantum entangled particles, or Spooky Action at a distance, as coined by Einstein, can share information between them, no matter how far they are away from each other. This means that data can be shared in tech that are on the other side of the world or even farther using these applications. Scientists have had a hard time getting particles to become entangled, and with this tool, PyTheus, it has become easier and can lead to continued progress in quantum computing. PyTheus was created to help design quantum experiments. Trained on data, the AI was able to learn physics and created a process that kept having the same result. The scientists were skeptical of the results initially because it was not using the expected methods and was instead doing something simpler. So the scientist tested the experiment and was able to entangle the particles.

This breakthrough could be used for future technologies and more secure messaging. Though quantum computing in a commercial sense may need other breakthroughs, as there are device limitations and background sounds that may limit larger adoptions. Learn more about Spooky Action at a distance in the video below.
