LCC Disaster Response, Human Care, and K-9 Comfort Dog teams clean up and care across Missouri

With rooftops blown apart, homes devastated with damage, and tree limbs scattered across yards and streets, Missouri has endured a week and a half of severe weather and heavy hearts. From St. Louis to Springfield, communities across the state have been hit hard following multiple tornadoes and straight line windstorms.

Lutheran Church Charities has been on the ground this week with Disaster Response, Human Care, and K-9 Comfort Dog teams to help local LCMS churches with damage assessments, chainsaw work, debris removal, food and resource distribution, and spiritual care and comfort.

Bringing Hope, Honoring the Lost: LCC Comfort Dogs and HMC Minister to Fire Survivors in Milwaukee

On Mother’s Day, tragedy struck Milwaukee, WI, as a fire tore through Highland Court Apartments, claiming five lives and displacing nearly 100 residents.

On Memorial Day, survivors gathered to grieve, remember, and begin healing—with help from the LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs and Hearts of Mercy & Compassion.

Through shared tears, heartfelt stories, and the quiet presence of comfort dogs, hope began to rise from the ashes. Residents opened up about loss, resilience, and faith—and found comfort in knowing they weren’t alone.

The stories shared were powerful—of survivors turning pain into purpose, and of deep gratitude for simple acts of kindness. LCC’s ministry of presence made a lasting impact.

A Community United in Gratitude After a 38-Hour Stand-Off in Fredonia, WI

A few weeks ago, the community of Fredonia, WI, faced a terrifying 38-hour stand-off with an armed individual barricaded in his home. Thanks to the courage and calm of first responders—and the quiet strength of local faith leaders—the incident ended with no injuries or loss of life. In the days that followed, St. Paul Grafton’s Hearts of Mercy & Compassion (HMC) team stepped forward to thank and honor those who kept the community safe.
