LCC K-9 COMFORT DOGS & HEARTS OF MERCY & COMPASSION BRING A COMFORTING PRESENCE TO CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA, COMMUNITY FOLLOWING WALMART SHOOTING
Following an invite from Pastor Nate Speerbrecker from Community of Hope Lutheran Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs responded with a loving and comforting presence, bringing hope to yet another devastated community affected by a mass shooting.
On Tuesday night, November 22, a Walmart night team lead began a deadly rampage less than an hour before the store was scheduled to close, killing six employees, injuring four (two critically), and traumatizing many Thanksgiving shoppers before taking his own life.
LCC also worked with Rev. Dr. Bill Harmon, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) Southeast District President and pastor at King of Glory in Williamsburg, Virginia, who welcomed both the LCC K-9 Ministry and Hearts of Mercy & Compassion (HMC) to continue serving the grieving communities in the Southeast District.
LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs Amos (Our Savior's Way - Ashburn, Virginia), Claudia (Trinity - Toledo, Ohio), Kezia (Emmanuel - Baltimore, Maryland), and Solomon (King of Glory - Williamsburg, Virginia), and their handlers spent time with Chesapeake Fire Station 4 that arrived first on the scene. The teams also visited Chesapeake Fire Station 3, which responded to the shooting. The LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams were honored to be able to meet the men on shift that night. The love, dedication, and care they display for the victims and employees are inspiring.
We thank all the first responders who responded quickly to the call for help: the quick-thinking 911 operators, the Chesapeake police officers, firefighters, and EMS. These brave women and men face and respond to tragedies that none of us can imagine.
The LCC K-9 Comfort Dog teams and Chesapeake Community of Hope Lutheran Church worked together to put together LCC Hearts of Mercy & Compassion, Crosses for Losses for the six victims, and placed them at the memorial site near Walmart.
The LCC Hearts of Mercy and Compassion ministry and the LCC K-9 Ministry teams serving the community in Chesapeake were blessed by the hospitality and loving assistance of our brothers and sisters at Chesapeake Community of Hope Lutheran Church together, sharing the mercy, compassion, presence, and proclamation of Jesus Christ with those who are suffering and in need.
"From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Ephesians 4:16
We continue to pray for the Walmart employees, their families and friends, and the community to be comforted, loved, remembered, and helped during this time of grief, pain, fear, and uncertainty.

LCC's K-9 Comfort Dog Ministry and Hearts of Mercy & Compassion Ministry never charge those we serve as we bring the Mercy, Compassion, Presence and Proclamation of Jesus Christ to those suffering and in need. We know that comfort is needed to help these shocked and devastated communities and the first responders who serve them.

HELP LCC SHARE THE LOVE OF JESUS THIS CHRISTMAS WITH PRESENTS OF FOOD FOR CHILDREN IN HAITI'S TENT CITY
Donations needed to provide children and their families with food
Through your generous donations, Lutheran Church Charities continues to provide scholarships for children in the tent city in Haiti. Each year for Christmas, we ask that you consider a gift of food for the children.
Because of the current political crisis in Haiti, the cost of food has risen dramatically. We are asking for donations to provide each child with a food package of basic supplies that will feed their family during the Christmas break. Without this assistance, many of the children will go hungry.
The cost is $65.00 per child for a gift of basic food staples.
Please consider a generous donation to show the love and compassion of Jesus to these children this Christmas.

WE ARE SO CLOSE!
ONLY $3,700 NEEDED TO CHANGE THE LIVES OF SIXTEEN CHRIST THE KING STUDENTS

Christ the King 2023 Graduating Class
Zion, Zayd, Magic, Jaylen, and Pastor John Brazeal
Scholarship Goal: $48,000
Donations Received: $44,300
At Christ the King Lutheran School in Chicago, Illinois, the students are taught how to serve rather than be served, to love in both actions and words, and to care for people they don’t even know.
Last week, Christ the King's students Zayd and Morgan, with help from Morgan’s grandmother, and daughter Regina, prepared and delivered 102 Thanksgiving dinners for the homeless in their community.
Christ the King offers hot meals for the students three times a week. The meals are prepared by Morgan's grandmother in the school's kitchen.
Many of the students come from broken, struggling, low-income families. Some students came from the public school system with failing grades or functioning far below their appropriate grade level.
The Christian environment at Christ the King, smaller classes, love, and attention from the teachers helped these children to reach their God-given potential and purpose.

YOUR DONATIONS CONTINUE TO HELP LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN FORT MYERS, FLORIDA, WHO LOST EVERYTHING AFTER HURRICANE IAN
Kathy O’Day, Lutheran Church Charities Director of Disaster Response, received an urgent financial assistance request from Tim Richter, Director of Christian Education (DCE) at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Florida, to purchase basic living items needed for very low-income community members in Harlem Heights recovering from the destruction of their homes from Hurricane Ian. Debra Mathinos, Chief Programs Officer of Harlem Heights Community Center, made the initial request for assistance to Zion Lutheran Church, one of their very involved community partners for the past nine years.
Most of these families are now living in fully gutted homes, old campers, and even some tents on their property – and they will be living like this for at least the next six months to a year or more until their homes can be repaired or rebuilt.

Your Donations Purchased 40 Microwaves and 50 Chairs!
Donate to Continue to Help 40 – 50 Families in Need!
Zion is continuing to meet with Debra to see what basic living needs – such as microwaves, crockpots, hot plates, mini refrigerators, card tables, and chairs – are still needed by 40-50 families that can be met with LCC assistance. This will allow families to cook simple meals, have a place to sit and eat, and for children to do homework as they try to live as best they can in their gutted homes with minimal functional electrical outlets.
If any L.E.R.T certified individual is interested in volunteering on their own to do muck-outs or chainsaw work, LCMS Disaster Response is still operating a base camp at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Florida. It is planning to remain open until the second week of December.
Please prayerfully consider donating to help Lutheran Church Charities and Zion Lutheran Church help Harlem Heights families who are struggling and in need.
Please continue to pray for the residents affected by Hurricane Ian as they face a long recovery process.

Through LCC Disaster Response Ministry

Pastor David Dahlke – Lakeside Lutheran Church in Venice, Florida
"One of the life lessons we learn early from the Bible is 'Love Your Neighbor'… what do we do next. And God's hands send the people of L.E.R.T." He continues, "God would send these Samaritans to not only help us but to pray with us. To hold our hand if that's what we need, to give us a hug if that's what we need, to fix our roof if that's what we need."
Pastor Brian Albrecht – Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Charlotte, Florida
"We are here today because of the Lord's grace, and we will get through this. It's not going to stop us. We continue to worship. We continue to grow together, and I think relationships are becoming stronger within the congregation in reaching out to our neighbors here in the community by showing the love of Christ. Now we're looking at how we recover from all of this, and to have L.E.R.T. and LCC come down and help us, it's amazing." He continues, "We know that all things work together for the good for those who love God and are called according to His purposes."

"The journey again, the blessing and favor of God are making their way through and reaching the people in the liberated territories. We bring the essentials—support and prayer, food and hygiene supplies, medicines, and candles. We try to meet as many needs as possible.
In return, we receive gratitude and joy in our communications. God is good, and, despite the war and situation, He blesses those who seek and pray. We thank the partners who actively participate in financing and supporting trips to the frontline areas."

LUTHERAN SCHOOL TEACHER IN NEED OF RELIABLE VEHICLE
LCC received a request from Pastor Chad Bolosan of Messiah Lutheran Church in Sterling, Illinois, to help provide a reliable vehicle for a Lutheran School teacher.
Dear LCC,
We have a teacher at our school who is in need of a vehicle. She is the sole wage earner in her home as her husband is disabled and is having surgery over Christmas break. Their only car is no longer functional (the engine seized), and they are not able to have it repaired or afford a new one. She needs reliable transportation for work and to take her husband to medical appointments.
If anyone has a working vehicle to donate to this family, it would be such a blessing.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Rev. Chad Bolosan

RELIABLE VEHICLE NEEDED FOR STUDENT WHO IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT AT IGLESIA EVANGELICA IN AURORA, ILLINOIS
LCC received a request from Rev. Alex L. Merlo of Iglesia Evangélica in Aurora, Illinois, to provide a reliable vehicle for Max who faithfully serves the church.
Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
I write to you today to request a vehicle that would help one of the most important people within our ministry. In our church in Aurora, Illinois, I'm the senior Pastor, and while I'm responsible for providing the message of God's good news, I couldn't be heard in all the places people now hear our message if it wasn't with the help of our multimedia department. And while I say department, in reality, it is a group of volunteer teens and our administrative assistant Max. He works part-time at San Pablo and is a full-time college student. Even with a full schedule, Max helps with all technology/media aspects of our church.
Unfortunately, Max’s car has given up, and being a student and only working part-time, he isn't able to just get a new one, especially in the current market. I appeal to you to help support a young man whose focus is to serve the Lord with all his given talents. We have witnessed his growth as a man but also as a servant of the Lord. His commitment to serving with excellence has now impacted other young men in our congregation to serve as well. We value Max, and while we can't financially meet his one need right now, we ask you to consider our request to provide this young man with a vehicle to continue being able to travel to and from church and school.
Thank you!
Sincerely grateful to your ministry,
Rev. Alex Merlo

$30,000 NEEDED TO HELP PURCHASE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE VAN FOR A WOMAN WITH CEREBRAL PALSY
LCC received a request from Pastor Tim Eckert of Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to help fund a wheelchair accessible vehicle for a woman in need the church is assisting.
One of the most faithful members at Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a woman named Sheri. Sheri is a very pleasant and independent person who loves going to church and socializing and would like to have a regular job.
Cerebral Palsy and a pair of unsuccessful surgeries earlier in life left her unable to walk. She manages very well with the help of assistive devices, but getting into and out of a car independently remains a challenge.
Sheri has checked out used vans, determined a price that would work, and begun saving. She needs about $30,000 more to reach her goal.
Please help make a difference in her life and give her the gift of greater independence.
In Christ,
Pastor Tim Eckert
Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf
Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
My name is Sheri, and I was born with Cerebral Palsy.
I use an electric wheelchair, an electric scooter, and a walker every day. I have owned my own car for many years, but my electric wheelchair and/or scooter cannot fit in the back. I am not able to physically get my manual chair in and out of the vehicle, and I have to depend on others around me to help.
This poses a problem because I am an independent person, and whenever I drive anywhere, I have to make sure someone is there to help me each time I get in and out of my car.
I am looking for funding to get a wheelchair accessible van to improve my quality of life and help me remain as independent as possible.
Gratefully,
Sheri

Please prayerfully consider donating to help Sheri reach her goal and keep her independence and improve her quality of life.

RELIABLE VEHICLE NEEDED FOR A WOMAN IN NEED CARING FOR HER 90+ YEAR OLD MOTHER
LCC received a request from Pastor Erik Gauss of Cross Lutheran Church in Yorkville, Illinois to help provide a reliable vehicle for a woman in need the church is assisting.
Dear Friends,
We are working with a woman who was in an accident recently that totaled her car. The insurance payout does not cover the cost of another car. She has also had personal health issues that have left her in financial straits. She is the one responsible for getting her 90+ year-old mother to appointments.
Currently, friends take her where she needs to go but it is a strain on them. She loves the Lord and is trusting that He will provide.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
In Christ’s service and yours,
Pastor Erik Gauss

DISASTER RESPONSE TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION
To better manage volunteers and resources, FEMA has developed a guideline on credentialing volunteers for large-scale disasters. The federal guidelines indicate that volunteers responding to a disaster should be trained and certified.
LCC is providing LCMS disaster response training for Lutheran Early Response Teams (L.E.R.T.).
Should a disaster strike, these teams would be put on call and may be asked to deploy in 72 hours or less to the disaster site. This training will prepare a team member for credentialing and will focus on the safety, work, and ministry of Lutherans as Early Responders.
The registration cost for new L.E.R.T. volunteers is $35.00. As a refresher to update your ID, the cost is only $15.00.
ONLINE Basic L.E.R.T. Training
The online LCMS Basic L.E.R.T. training is geared towards responding to a disaster with Lutheran Church Charities in the Northern Illinois District or wherever we are invited to serve nationwide.
For the online training, you will receive a letter with instructions to access the portal to view the Basic L.E.R.T. training sessions.
Upon verification of watching and completing all Basic L.E.R.T. training sessions and quizzes, LCC will then send your DR manual, badge, your personal certificate, and vest.
If your church is interested in hosting a Basic L.E.R.T. Training or if you have any questions, contact the LCC Disaster Response team at DRAdmin@LutheranChurchCharities.org or 866-455-6466.
