Providing Hope One Letter At-A-Time
Kyle was added to the CIS Caseload just before school was canceled due to COVID-19 regulations. His school counselor had referred Kyle to CIS because he felt that Kyle was having a hard time fitting in and making friends. As a result, Kyle began wandering the halls during lunch which led to poor behavior choices. The Site Coordinator, Nikki was assigned to meet with Kyle, but was only given the chance to meet one time before school was released.
Nikki continued reaching out to Kyle, however he was not responding to phone calls or emails. Nikki then reached out through a hand-written note. To much surprise, Kyle sent a text saying, "Hey! I hope you're having a safe and wonderful time! I apologize for not coming to see you at school yet, I will when we come back! I read your letter you sent me, thank you! I truly appreciate your note and it enlightened me! Thank you for being here for me, I appreciate you a lot!"
Kyle's connection to Nikki and the Communities In Schools Program is growing despite not having daily interactions with her at school.
The intentionality of loving on kids and building relationships, despite social barriers, continues to speak volumes about the importance of the work our site coordinators provide particularly in this time of extreme isolation. Children in our community need connection now more than ever before. We are boots on the ground during these unprecedented times.

We continue to provide canned foods and other non-perishables for students and families. We also provide front porch drop-off's to families who may not have transportation. This provides us another opportunity to make sure everyone is doing okay.
We will continue to provide for basic needs as long as we are able. We appreciate your continued support, that allows this to be possible. With your partnership we are
MAKING A WAY
for kids and families to be supported during this time.

MAKING A WAY
THROUGH CLUBS & ACTIVITIES
|
|
Site Coordinator Kevin Partridge is always cooking up something interesting for Communities In Schools students at Westwood Middle School. This year he found a way to engage students that were struggling academically and having a hard time concentrating in class. He encouraged them to join the RoboGo club after school where he teaches students how to code robots. For some of the students, this club is the first chance they’ve had to experience STEM and get hands on learning about coding. They loved it and even went on to dominate at the Robotics Rumble competition, hosted by Lakeside High School! These young students went head to head with students from all over eastern Washington in navigation and maze events. The overall team took first place with their scores. This experience has taught those struggling students that they can succeed!

The Honor Roll Society:
We believe that greatness exists in every child, but hundreds of students in Spokane County face challenges such as poverty, hunger, homelessness, trauma, and more that can get in the way of their education. When provided with one-on-one support, 87% of our most at-risk students stay in school, but many more need help.
As a monthly donor, your steadfast support to Communities In Schools of Spokane County will connect students with caring adults, community resources and support systems. Community by community, school by school, child by child-we are all in this together!
