Small Bites January 27, 2022
creating opportunities to promote
& sell more VT products
to more buyers
2022 is looking hopeful for continuing B2B partnerships. If there is one thing we have learned since 2020, we need to build our alliances & joint ventures have proven to be engaging & successful.

There are some truly fabulous connections that have emerged building on community, creativity, & profitability. Procuring ingredients from other VT food manufacturers & farmers has helped drive sales of custom products & seasonal ventures. Many stores have been carrying a special blend of Heady Topper Mustard from Butterfly Bakery. Another fabulous "winter" item doing well in Vermont stores & sold across the region is the beer bratwurst blend of Vermont Salumi & Fiddlehead Brewing.  Another notable partnership between businesses is Gracie's Tamales purchase of masa from All Souls Tortilleria.

Of course, there are many other partnerships between businesses some as private label products, some as fundraisers for community programs, & some are events held in tandem that bring together communities. Some products have multiple applications too. Sisters of Anarchy sells partial raspberry pieces to bakers, jam makers & brewers of all sorts of beverages. Need some berry bits for your products?

We are not out of the omicron woods yet. Keeping on the positive side is at times a challenge. That’s where collaboration can be so helpful. Our willingness to create a food-based professional workforce that fits our food & farming needs can be a goal to shore up our countless staffing shortages in these tough times.
Winter Food Season

Fiddlehead IPA Brewing & Vermont Salumi have a good thing going for winter fare with their retail 8x14oz retail packs of bratwurst. Available widely throughout the northeast it is sold to many VT stores through BRP/Performance Food Group, Provisions International & Food Connects. These distributors contribute to expanding sales of VT foods instate & regionally.

Need some mustard with that brat? Promote Gustard, the joint venture of Butterfly Bakery & Guster, the local band helping turning out mustard sales. Check out the link for wholesale delivery to your store.
It may not seem like it should be (BRRRRR), but January has been a great month for sales of Sisters of Anarchy ice cream & their farm grown & produced syrups. Read all about this family owned fruit, wellness, & ice cream business in the recent Seven Days article.

New this winter are single serve 4 oz portions of several flavors currently selling well on their routes that include the Burlington & Stowe areas. They are expanding their delivery routes; Contact the Sisters for all the details on their products & delivery schedule.
Springfield Coop is more than six months in its new location. They are set up in a larger building with a more efficient floor plan, better receiving area, & improved overall merchandising capacity. The long process to move has resulted in a commitment to serving their shoppers. To meet their community needs during this current outbreak of infection they are continuing curbside pick-up for orders.

Congratulations to all the staff past & present who worked so hard (in a pandemic!) to make the move happen & create a more streamlined shopping experience.

With specials that include local products & national brands, they have cross promotions that increase sales across categories. Ploughgate Butter is one of their current specials supporting a local dairy. Well done Team SFC!
Community Matters

"I don't know what we'd do without it. The post office and the store. I come in every day to grab my mail and grab a few things and, for example, I'm grabbing some Elmore Mountain Bread for dinner tonight. I probably wouldn't do that if I didn't have to stop here and get my mail every day."
-Elmore customer
The Elmore General Store has been mentioned recently in Bites for its change in ownership. Along with the change came the news that the US Post Office will cancel its contract for mail services at the store.

Over the past several weeks community members raised awareness of what the loss of the PO would mean to this small rural town. They gained leverage from our federal legislators Senators Leahy, Sanders & Congressman Welch to keep the post office in the back of the store as it’s been since the 1880s. Currently the store & the USPS are negotiating a contract that may include keeping the Post Office boxes.
NE Teams Up for Stronger Sales

Sustainable Business Network in Boston is hooking up with Vermont & other NE states to widen their network. One goal is to help food manufacturers reach new market channels.

An upcoming virtual tradeshow on March 29th is one that Vermont businesses can join to meet regional store & distributor buyers. Check it out for all the events & details!
Governor Scott recognizes the power of collaborations & gave a shout out to community financial support to reclaim old general stores. In his recent
annual budget address, he mentioned The Genny in Albany & the Brownsville Butcher & Pantry. Around Vermont, there are several stores & restaurants on the receiving end of community support to build a relocalized business economy.
The Real Organic Symposium is back as virtual event on two dates January 30th & February 6th.

With topics of local & national interest, we encourage all store dairy buyers to attend the first session. The organic dairy industry is under great stress & on January 30th you will learn about the intricacies & challenges of dairy production & current trends in consumer preferences for local. Details & registration. Click on the ROP logo above for an informative dairy video.
