Sunday on Cultural Connection on the Air - Shotsi LaJoie talks about the It's Never Too Late to Begin Again workshop at Center for Spiritual Care in Vero Beach; Caroline Vinyard, COO of Hibiscus Children's Center discusses 35 years of serving abused children on the Treasure Coast.
Listen to Cultural Connection on the Air at a new time and place, Sundays at 8 a.m. on WQOL, 103.7 fm.

If you miss the show Sunday, you can listen to a replay for one week at willimiller.com.
Calendars are showing some significant dates still to come in 2020. Eight weeks (election), eleven weeks (Thanksgiving), fifteen weeks (Christmas), give or take a few days. Is anybody else thinking that New Year's Eve just might not mark the end of this mess and we won't wake up January 1 with the Mummers striding up Broad Street and our old lives back in place?

I can feel the pain of small business owners barely hanging on by their fingernails but can only imagine what CEOs and executive directors are going through as another season is looking as though it might be inching its way, at least partially, toward the COVID drain. My deep admiration grows for them with every email about a workaround or a completely new concept. Drive-in symphony orchestra concerts? Why not? Online art schools? Sure!

Look for announcements about something old — yes, the Garden Club of Indian River County's annual Christmas ornament is in the works — and something new in the form of an extremely ambitious plan for Keeping The Arts Alive. And if the audience can't come to Nutcracker on the Indian River, Ballet Vero Beach will bring it to us in a new and exciting way.

We know the tough days aren't behind us yet but we can be so thankful that our skies are not red from uncontrolled wildfires all around us and falling ash isn't filling our air. How many months ago did I write here that we just have to be patient, never dreaming I'd be saying it again mid-September? Hang in and hang on. And take a bit of time to remember where you were on September 11, 2001.
If you missed the Zoom conversation between Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry this week, try this link to the archived event.
Lake Wales History Museum
Long ago, back when we were taking real and armchair road trips to places that were actually open, I began including events at the Lake Wales History Museum. The museum, a little gem in a lovely part of Florida, continues to add virtual events and activities for the community through these trying times.
Even though the doors are closed, the Lake Wales History Museum has a lot going on. Programs coming up this week are all virtual, so you'll need to go to the website to learn how to hear Sharon Koskoff talk about Habana Deco: Art and Architecture in a Florida Humanities talk. Koskoff said, "The Florida Humanities Speaker Series connects authors, artists, writers and historians with communities throughout the state. In our current COVID-19 pandemic situation, sharing information through entertaining and informative lectures is even more vital than ever! Online virtual presentations can keep us Together... and never ALONE!"
Yes, there was a Florida before it officially became a state. Twelve thousand years before, in fact, although it wasn't called Florida then. Still, celebrating 500 years of history in 2013 isn't anything to sneeze at.

The Museum of Florida History has a traveling exhibit that's available online at the Lake Wales History Museum, but only through Sept. 26.
I've been wanting to read a recently released book by Zora Neale Hurston, Barracoon, from the day I got a press release about it and now I'm inspired to do it. My copy has arrived, just in time for the virtual Museum Book Club discussion Sept. 13.

Backus Museum Makes a Plan
Pandemic or not, J. Marshall Adams, executive director of the Backus Museum and Gallery has a plan to keep its big anniversary year on track.

"This year as the Museum celebrates its 60th Season, the arts have a more important role to play in our lives than ever before. The Best of the Best opens our anniversary season on October 10, 2020. As we reopen, we are reminded that COVID-19 has kept us from many of the things that enrich our lives, including the arts. The Backus Museum is delighted to celebrate its 60th year by continuing its role of bringing the community together through art. Even at six feet apart, we can stand as one during these trying times."

Pulitzer Acknowledges the Pandemic

In support of the Drama community, whose ability to produce work in its usual capacity has been diminished by the COVID pandemic, the Pulitzer Prize Board has amended eligibility rules in the category for the 2021 Prize cycle, which recognizes work produced during the 2020 calendar year.

“The spread of the COVID virus has closed theaters but has in no way dampened the creativity of the nation's playwrights. In this year, of all years, we wanted to honor the work that is being done. The shows are going on, even if the audience is remote,” said Pulitzer co-chairs Stephen Engelberg, Editor-in-Chief, ProPublica, and Aminda Marqués Gonzalez, President, Publisher and Executive Editor, Miami Herald.

As always, eligible works include full-length dramas by American authors that opened in the United States between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. For the 2021 award, eligible entries may also include plays that were scheduled to be produced in theatres in calendar 2020 but postponed or cancelled due to the pandemic, as well as plays produced and performed in places other than theaters, including online, outside or in site-specific venues, during the year.

Photo Exhibit at Environmental Learning Center
From Kat Redner at ELC:

Vero Beach resident Brian LaPersonerie spends his free time exploring the local shores and parks— seeking out nature’s next big moment.
Brian’s photo exhibit, An Outdoor Revolution, is now on display at the Environmental Learning Center. His nature photography is showcased on metal prints and features images of wildlife, nature scenes and outdoor lifestyle shots.
“As inhabitants of this magnificent planet, it's up to each of us to protect the earth, maximize conservation, stop pollution and understand the importance of regulation. If my photos can transport you, educate you, open your eyes or take you away, you’ve fulfilled my dream as a member of this outdoor revolution,” Brian said.

A nature enthusiast at heart, Brian LaPersonerie always had a love of the outdoors. Growing up on Long Island, Brian spent much time exploring nature – hiking, fishing, crabbing, and clamming off his father’s boat. He spent summers at his grandparent’s lake house in Pennsylvania, where watching wildlife was a daily ritual.
LaPersonerie's studies in art and three dimensional sculpture landed him at New York Institute of Technology with an art education major. From there, he developed an interest for textures and color – realizing all the natural beauty that surrounds us.
“To me, nature is art and I find inspiration and art in all that is the outdoors. If sharing my photos can help someone make a better connection with nature or result in them becoming better stewards of our environment, that's inspiration,” Brian said, “I feel so grateful to have been chosen to share my photographs with the community. This is my first ever exhibit and couldn't be more proud to be a part of the ELC's mission to educate and create awareness about our environment.”
View Brian’s collection, “An Outdoor Revolution” at the Environmental Learning Center until November 22. The Environmental Learning Center is open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free with admission.
