To the Beloved Community
Yesterday's Bible Study - both at Noon and after our joint Midweek Lenten Service - focused on hospitality. Every congregation, and I mean every congregation, says that they are hospitable, that they are welcoming and caring. Many say the words but don't exactly follow up with their actions. Genesis is different - we say it, and we do it. This is an important part of who we are and whose we are.

That said, as we are all on this pilgrimage together, we can always work on our hospitality. Yesterday, I noted that there are three points that are central to being hospitable:
1. Making space.
2. Making ready.
3. Being open and available to the needs of others.

Each of these is both figurative and literal. We make space, literally making space for someone to be a part of our community (sometimes as basic as moving over in the pew and welcoming them and helping them in worship), as well as making space in our hearts and heads and spirits for people to enter in. We make ready, doing the work that we know will make a visitor or guest truly feel that we have thought of folks who may not yet be a part of this community. Being open and available - truly listening to the needs of others.

We do this not only for those we have not yet met, but for the people who are closest to us, and we do it for God. Just as God, in Christ, has done for us. God has made space for us, made ready for us, and is open and available to us.

Hospitality touches everything that we do as a family of faith - discipleship, evangelism, faith formation, spiritual care, worship, health and social concerns, stewardship - you name it.

Let us continue to be a people and place of hospitality - for that is showing Christ's love to all, and right now, people are looking for places and spaces and people that not only say they are welcoming and caring, but actually are. Let us continue to share the gift and blessing of our hospitality.

Peace,
Pastor Ken
