Unleavened Bread for Maundy Thursday

A blessed Holy Week to you!

This Maundy Thursday, April 9, at 7 p.m., we will gather to worship online at spdlc.org/livestream. During this worship service that recounts the Last Supper in the upper room, we will celebrate Holy Communion. We want to give you the opportunity to participate by preparing in advance a small amount of unleavened bread.
Below is a simple, kid-friendly recipe for unleavened bread, perfect for celebrating communion. This bread serves as a reminder of the Passover, when God led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. Unleavened bread is a traditional part of the Jewish Passover seder, the same meal celebrated by Jesus with his disciples on the night of his arrest, that we, as Christians celebrate as the Lord’s Supper.
Unleavened Bread
1 cup of all-purpose flour
scant 1/3 cup of olive oil*
scant 1/3 cup of water
1/4 teaspoon of salt

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, combine all ingredients and stir with a spoon. Divide dough into six parts, rolling into a ball and then pressing flat on the baking sheet. You can use a knife to score the top of the bread with the symbol of a cross, if desired.

Bake for 12-14 minutes, until lightly golden around the edges. Allow to cool.

*Though olive oil is the biblical precedent, you
can certainly substitute with other types of oil.
We recognize that celebrating communion in this way does not substitute for sharing this meal together in the sanctuary. However, we feel that on Maundy Thursday, especially, it is important -- and appropriate -- for us to share communion as a body, even if we are separated physically. With you, we look forward to the day when we can once again gather around the altar together. Until then, we hope this is a meaningful way to connect us all to one another, and to the God who loves us.

As always, stay in touch, be well, and

God Bless,
