Making the Most of Summer

Summer is here - and with it comes a welcome break from routines. But for many families, it’s also a time to reset and prepare for the school year ahead. Whether it’s reevaluating screen time, reviewing medication plans, or finally scheduling a psychological evaluation, July is the perfect time to take a breath and invest in your child’s mental wellness.

In this issue, we share tools, insights, and RCBM resources to help your child thrive this summer, and beyond.

Comprehensive Psychological Evaluation at RCBM

At RCBM, we provide comprehensive psychological evaluations to help individuals, school-aged through adulthood to better understand their cognitive abilities (IQ), academic achievement, and emotional and social functioning. Our evaluations are in-depth, personalized, and designed to support a wide range of needs. Whether you are navigating learning differences in reading, writing, or math, seeking an evaluation for autism spectrum disorders, or pursuing accommodations for tests like the SAT, ACT, or LSAT, we are here to help.

Screen Time for Kids and Teens

Elizabeth Sweet, PMHNP-BC, MSN discusses the impact of screen time on mental health along with guidance for parents such as checking your child's viewing history, making sure that apps downloaded are age appropriate and being attuned to unregulated apps. Other helpful suggestions are also given including paying attention to your child's behavior based on what they are viewing and having scheduled screen time.

AADHD and Summertime:

Why Now Is the Right Time to Re-evaluate Treatment

Summer is often a welcome break for students, but it’s also an ideal time to review and adjust your child’s ADHD treatment plan. In a recent blog post, Dr. Joel Young explains that July and early August are optimal for making changes to ADHD medications. Without the pressure of school, families have the space to monitor dosage adjustments or trial new medications—without the risk of academic disruption.

Whether you’re starting treatment for the first time or fine-tuning what’s already in place, this window offers an opportunity to reset before the school year begins.
