behind the SCENES

government alphabet works for you

Ever wonder how that two-person window installation company got to be part of the $500K renovation at that Ohio State Park Center? Or how that newly founded catering operation seems to be packed with business at the federal courthouse? It is because those entrepreneurs took the time to pursue their state and federal certifications.

Government certifications are accreditations earned to establish your firm’s capabilities, knowledge, and standards for related work and opportunities. These certifications provide nationwide credibility, ensuring different agencies, institutions, and organizations recognize them. In addition, they are a great way to level the playing field for small businesses and make it easier for small businesses to get traction to grow.

In 2020, Marquee began the worthwhile process of obtaining important certifications in areas of expertise and specialization. The firm was the runner-up for an important 5-year state contract. We realized the importance of getting certified, not only for the opportunity to find new business but also to build confidence with our existing clients that we are following the best practices for small businesses.

Small businesses often are part of what the government refers to as “set-asides” and offer small businesses a competitive advantage in bringing revenue to the company. The government contracts will reserve a designated percentage of their spending for small businesses with specific certifications.

MARQUEE began by pursuing its Ohio Women-Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) certification with the help of the great staff at the Youngstown Business Incubator’s Minority Business Assistance Center (MBAC). Tanisha Wheeler and her staff are working with me now on other state affiliations. From there I went up the hill to Youngstown State University. Scot Loveland and the staff at the Ohio APEX Accelerator opened my eyes to why becoming a certified SBA Women-Owned Small Business should be an important piece of the Marquee business strategy.

There are many different types of government certifications, each with its own rules and requirements. By undergoing the rigorous process of certification, our clients are assured that our business practices align with national and state standards. Perhaps it would work for your business too!

get ready for RED

Source

Summer is out and with that comes the excitement of a new fall wardrobe. The vibe this season is called quiet luxury, which basically means filling your closet with high-quality essentials that look good with everything.

This season the runways were dominated by one color: rich red. This opposes the typically muted earth tones one would expect for fall - giving off a hue that is bold and beguiling. No matter your shade, this will be a great way to make a statement this fall.

Translate this from the runway to graphic design - and bright pops of red to accent something or make a splash is something to play with. Even the changing leaves give us that pop of red which is very pleasing to enjoy. Some of the other fall trends are:

  1. Gothic Romance
  2. Art Prints
  3. Normcore 2.0
  4. Navy on Black
  5. Preplum
  6. Black Topcoats
  7. Off-the-Shoulder
  8. Metallic Footwear
  9. Bows
  10. Working Girl
  11. Sweaters

I recommend you invest in some staple pieces that can be used time and time again!

On Tuesday, October 24, the members of Rotary District 6650 (a combined group of Rotary Clubs local to Northeast Ohio) are joining together with other Rotary Clubs nationwide to host a unique joint fundraiser in celebration of World Polio Day.

The 46 Clubs and local high school or college affiliates are selling homemade long john/cream stick donuts, topped with a dab of purple icing. This represents the purple paint that is placed on the children's pinkie fingers in developing countries after they receive the polio vaccine.

We strategized a campaign consisting of digital marketing, event promotion, and brand awareness to increase user engagement, drive community involvement, and initiate event partnerships. Graphic design, media relations, social media, and advertising were implemented to ensure the event's success.

Launched in Tennessee in 2018, the Purple Pinkie Donut Project has earned more than $4.7 million for polio eradication. This is the first time an Ohio Rotary District has adopted the program. The goal for 2023 is to raise that nationally.
