I don’t know about you, but I thought this whole Covid thing would be over a long time ago. Nope. Another year of us putting food into boxes and boxes into cars.
For sure there are things I miss greatly…like serving a hot lunch to folks and watching them catch up with each other around a lunch table or in the sanctuary of the church. There are things that just can’t be replicated as long as we have to largely work outside.
But, there are ways in which we haven’t lost a sense of community. This community includes clients who come by in their cars, clients who walk up after having come by bus or in a taxi, volunteers who come faithfully, week by week, to help this process flow.
To underscore that community has not been lost, let me tell you a story. A few months ago, while outside giving food to clients who had walked up, I received a gift. He was a regular client; I saw him nearly every week. We had talked often of our families and our lives. One day he gave me a big bear hug. Guess I needed it because I will remember that moment for a long time, surprised by the sense of community that - despite the change in how we distribute food - never really left.
So, may we step into the flow of love wherever we see it in this world and in our lives, flowing to us and through us. And, may we have the intention to remain there.
