When it comes to the health of your beloved pets, the care provided by a skilled veterinarian is truly invaluable. And when it comes to finding ways to fit the costs of that care within your budget, your vet can likely help with that as well! Medications can be expensive, but by exploring different options to stretch your budget with your vet's assistance, you may find significant savings without compromising the wellbeing of your furry companions. Below are a few tips:
Use coupon apps at your local pharmacy when applicable.
Did you know that many medications commonly prescribed in veterinary medicine are also used in human medicine? This means that you may be able to obtain these medications at your local (human) pharmacy. Note that sometimes the generic vs. vet-branded names of the same medication will differ, so check with your vet to determine whether the equivalent medication and dosage for your pet is available in a pet-safe formulation from a standard pharmacy. If it is, you can take advantage of prescription coupon apps like GoodRx or SingleCare to compare prices at various local pharmacies. These apps are free to use and often offer substantial savings. If you find a great price, most vets are more than happy to send your pet's prescription to the pharmacy of your choice upon request!
Check online pharmacy options and auto ship pricing for refills.
While the coupon apps mentioned above might not cover medications exclusively used in veterinary medicine, many retail giants, such as Walmart and Costco, have pharmacy departments that carry a wide range of pet-specific medications at modest savings. Furthermore, there are numerous online pet pharmacies available, including well-known names like Chewy, 1800PetMeds, and PetVM (just to name a few!). Your vet can supply a pet prescription to one of these providers. If your pet requires long-term medication, consider setting up a recurring order for auto-ship refills through these online pharmacies, as they often offer additional savings for recurring orders.
Learn to administer injectable medications at home.
If your pet requires medication that is administered via subcutaneous injection, learning to give the injections at home can save you time and money - and may potentially reduce anxiety for your pet. Speak with your vet about teaching you the proper technique for storing the medication, preparing the right dosage, and administering the injection. Your vet can supervise you while giving the first few injections until you feel confident doing it on your own at home.
Remember, your pet's health is of utmost importance, and we always recommend consulting your vet before making any changes to their medications or treatment plans. With a little extra effort to explore these cost-saving options under the guidance of your vet, you can give your pets the chance to thrive while remaining mindful of your budget.

IMMEDIATE NEED FOR FOSTERS!
|
|
|
Calling out to our Washington and Oregon pack!! I know, I know...we are always begging for fosters. But it's a very real need and right now more than ever. For many reasons, our pool of fosters shrinks over time. Some of our fosters move out of the region; some have changes in circumstances that leave them unable to foster; and some happily end up adopting their foster dogs and can't take in yet another. The point is - we have a continual need for more fosters to sign up to replace the ones we lose!
Along with most other rescues and shelters, WAMAL is currently receiving far more requests to surrender dogs than adoption applications. Our kennel spots are full, and we have now unfortunately reached a point where WAMAL cannot take in more dogs in need unless we secure additional foster space in which to host them.
We understand that WAMAL requires substantial support from this community, including fundraising, event participation, and volunteering. Saving these wonderful dogs truly relies on the collective efforts of our whole community. If you could possibly step up to host a foster dog, please consider doing so. And if you can’t but know someone else who would make a great foster for a Mal, please recruit them to the cause!
Fostering has a direct, positive impact on the animal and is a tremendously rewarding experience for those who choose to become caregivers. You have the power to save lives and make a difference in rescue.
Thank you for any help you can provide! ~~The WAMAL Foster Team

We are reaching out to ask for assistance for one of our rescue pups. VALDEZ is a super sweet 1 year old boy who can be a little shy when first meeting people. He is extremely playful with a lot of energy when matched with another dog of similar energy. Nicknamed “Journey”, he had quite the long trip from Mexico to WAMAL via a stopover at a rural shelter in northcentral Washington, who reached out to us about this wonderful boy.
Valdez arrived with a condition known as “cherry eye”. Though you don't often notice it, all dogs possess a third eyelid at the inner corner of their eye. Called the nictitating membrane, it serves as a kind of windshield wiper to help keep the cornea moist and free of debris. The third eyelid's tear gland can become dislodged (prolapsed) from its normal location and consequently protrude into the inner corner of the eye. Instead of the typically flat, triangular structure observed in the corner of the eye, a small, bulbous, pink structure can be readily seen — hence the term "cherry eye."
|
|
|
Leaving this condition untreated can lead to complications such as dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and other eye problems. Surgical correction is the most common and effective treatment for cherry eye. The procedure involves securing the gland back into its normal position and tightening the surrounding tissues to prevent further prolapse. This surgery is usually done under general anesthesia.
The estimated cost for the surgery is $1200. This crucial surgery will give Valdez a more comfortable life and a better chance at finding his furever home. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be deeply appreciated and go a long way in helping us give Valdez the care he deserves.

Oh hey there - have you ever thought to yourself "I'd really like a malamute if only they didn't need soooo much exercise"? If so, my name is Remus and have I got a proposition for you!
Through no fault of my own, I am searching for a home again. So...I propose that you give me a cozy home, frequent but short walks, and daily belly rubs. In return, I will provide you with all the malamute good looks, floof, playfulness, and affection you could possibly desire. I am so handsome and loving that honestly you would be getting the better end of the deal!
I'm a senior dog, and the perfect home for me would include a nice soft bed, carpet or rugs for traction - I have a few of those I can bring with me if you need them - no other dogs, and kind humans who I can love with all my heart. I'm housetrained, leash trained, and very affectionate. As you can see I'm handsome too, and I've been known to use my puppy dog eyes to beg for extra treats - I'm quite food motivated if there are other skills you'd like to train!
So whaddya say...do we have a deal? If so please apply to adopt me or foster me today!

Hello everyone - I caught you staring at my unusually golden eyes. Can't say I blame you - they are beautifully mesmerizing, aren't they?
My name is Willow, and I'll have you know I'm not just a pretty face. I'm intelligent and loving, and I have that strong-willed personality typical of malamutes. I'm looking for a furever home that is both experienced and comfortable with the breed. I like to be taught, not forced - I respond best to gentle, patient leadership, alongside a bit of adventure and playtime to build our bond. I am a remarkable dog, and if you earn my trust as a calm and consistent leader, we will have a friendship deeper than you ever thought possible!
Diva that I am, I prefer not to share my home (or my people or my toys or my food) with other dogs. I am housetrained and already know my basic commands - though I may ignore them when it suits me! And sure, I might talk back a bit, but who doesn't love hearing that lovely mally "Woo-Woo"?
I see you...you're still staring at my pretty eyes. Why not just apply to adopt me or foster me already; then you can see them all the time!
