MCLTRG OCTOBER 2026 NEWSLETTER

A Message From The Executive Director

As we move into October, September’s focus on preparedness is a timely reminder that being ready is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, our families, and our neighbors. After all we have experienced through the wildfires, we know how quickly conditions can change. With increased discussion about El Niño and the potential for rain along our coast, now is a good time to take a few simple steps:

  • Sign up for alerts through city & county websites.
  • Check your home and property for leaks, drainage issues, and loose branches, mudflow, & gutters.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with water, food, medications, flashlights, and important documents.
  • Know your plan and stay informed, understand evacuation routes, and have a way to stay connected with loved ones.

Preparedness is more than being ready for the next storm—it is about caring for one another and strengthening our ability to face whatever comes next. When we prepare together, we build a community better equipped to respond, recover, and come back stronger. That is what resilience looks like. How can you participate in your community's resilience?

With care,

Shannon Dunn

“Let’s Open the Door to Recovery”

Habitat LA @ the DRC!

MCLTRG was grateful to host Habitat LA’s “Let’s Open the Door to Recovery” Application Event in our Malibu Disaster Recovery Center during Community Build Week. We appreciated the energy, connection, and sense of community that came from having survivors and recovery partners together in the same room.

The Malibu event brought community members together, providing survivors an opportunity to connect one-on-one with Habitat LA’s ReBUILD Navigation team, ask questions, and receive guidance on the application process. These conversations helped families take meaningful next steps in their recovery journey.

We were also honored to attend and observe the incredible work happening at the Habitat LA wall build. Seeing Malibu residents watch the walls of their home be built in front of their eyes was a powerful reminder that recovery is not just about rebuilding homes—it is about restoring hope, connection, and a sense of possibility.

We are especially grateful to Habitat LA for meeting survivors where they are, providing care and resources, and recognizing that every step forward matters.

MCLTRG looks forward to continuing to work alongside Habitat LA to support survivors and move recovery forward, together.

Malibu Canyon Village Brush Clearance Project

The Malibu Canyon Village Brush Clearance Project removed approximately 10 tons / 20,000 pounds of dead, dry, and

non-native vegetation from around the property.

This work reduced hazardous fuels near residential structures, access areas, and vulnerable slopes while supporting Malibu Canyon Village documentation toward Firewise Certification.

More than 30 local Brigade members volunteered their time over the weekend in extreme heat to help protect the community and

move practical wildfire resilience work forward.

Rebuild Centers:

A Valuable Resource For Moving Forward

One piece of feedback we continue to hear from residents working through the rebuilding process is this: visiting a Rebuild Center in person makes a difference.

Survivors have shared that when feeling stuck in the permitting process, sitting down face-to-face with someone who could answer questions and help problem-solve made all the difference. Rather than navigating the process alone, they were able to work through challenges, better understand the next steps, and find a path forward.

If you've been hitting roadblocks or aren't sure where to turn next, we encourage you to visit either the City of Malibu Rebuild Center or the LA County One-Stop Permit Center. The staff are there to help, and their goal is to work with you to find solutions and keep your rebuild moving forward.

See below for details on locations and hours of operation.
