A DISASTER RECOVERY COALITION ESTABLISHED BY | | |
As I step into the role of Executive Director of the Malibu Community Long Term Recovery Group, I am filled with gratitude and humility for the opportunity to serve alongside such an incredible community. After just one month in this role, I am continually reminded of the goodness, dedication, compassion, and kindness that surround us through our partners and community members.
Something I have been reflecting on recently is a lesson from one of my disaster case management trainings. In this training they emphasized the importance of always asking: “What is one thing that is going well?”
In the midst of the mountains of paperwork, unexpected challenges, and the many complexities of recovery, it can be easy to focus only on what still needs to be done. But taking a moment to recognize what is going well helps ground us, reminds us of the progress being made, and keeps us moving forward with hope and purpose.
So, I invite you to pause and ask yourself: What is one thing that is going well? And perhaps just as importantly — is there someone you can share that with?
Thank you for welcoming me into this work and for continuing to show me what makes the disaster recovery community so special. I look forward to walking alongside you as we continue this journey of recovery, resilience, and rebuilding together.

From Data to Doorsteps: Survivor Network Accelerator Grant Cohort Meeting
Recently, Shannon Dunn & Kasey Earnest had the opportunity to represent the MCLTRG and attend an in-person cohort session as part of the Department of Angels Survivor Network Accelerator Grant. The session, “From Data to Doorsteps,” focused on strengthening outreach efforts and exploring how we can work together to reach 100% of survivors impacted by the January 2025 Los Angeles fires.
We are incredibly grateful to the Department of Angels for creating space for this inspiring group of disaster recovery organizations from both the Eaton and Palisades fire communities to come together. Being surrounded by so many dedicated individuals and organizations committed to serving survivors was a powerful reminder that recovery is built through collaboration, connection, and a shared commitment to showing up for our communities. We left feeling inspired, encouraged, and grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside one another and continue building a stronger network of support for survivors.

Senior Wildfire Preparedness Event
Brings Community Together

On June 14, the Malibu Community Long Term Recovery Group and Boys & Girls Club of Malibu were proud to host a successful Senior Wildfire Preparedness Event at Duke's Malibu, where 75 local seniors gathered on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for great food, great company, and practical information designed to help our community be better prepared for future wildfires.
Sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Horvath and Department of Angels, and with the support of the American Red Cross and the California Community Foundation, the event featured engaging presentations from Local Brigade members Tyler Hauptman and Mikke Pierson, who shared essential wildfire preparedness strategies, while Annie Barbour from United Policyholders provided valuable guidance on insurance readiness and protecting your home before disaster strikes.
Participants also created and took home laminated emergency contact cards, a simple but important preparedness tool to keep critical phone numbers handy in the event of an emergency, especially if a cell phone battery dies when it's needed most.

The afternoon concluded with a lively question-and-answer session featuring Malibu City Council Member Marianne Riggins, Local Brigade members, and United Policyholders, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions and learn from local experts. Guests also enjoyed an exciting raffle with prizes including tickets to Pepperdine University events, Malibu Chili Cook-Off tickets, a Duke's Malibu gift certificate, City of Malibu prize packages, and more.
Throughout the event, attendees connected with community partners who shared preparedness resources, helpful information, and take-home materials. This event marks the first of what we hope will be many opportunities for meaningful peer-to-peer connection centered on strengthening community resilience. We are excited to continue bringing neighbors together to learn from one another, build relationships, and ensure that the Malibu community is even better prepared for whatever comes next.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this inaugural event such a memorable and successful afternoon.

The City of Malibu has issued 665 building permits related to rebuild activities and has received 241 planning submittals, with 180 planning applications approved.
Community Development Director Yolanda Bundy is available every Friday at the Rebuild Center to meet with residents and address questions or concerns. Appointments can be made by contacting (310) 456-2489, ext. 229.
