Letter from the CEO

Wow, it is hard to believe it is December already. What a year! As we approach the year end, I aways try to pause from the busyness of the season to reflect a bit; both on the year behind me as well as the year ahead.

One reflective practice I’ve come to appreciate is the Jesuit contemplative practice called the examen. The examen asks the practitioner to look back on their day, or month, or year, starting at the beginning and going to the end. Looking back, the examen asks us to identify the moments and places where we came alive and felt most ourselves. These moments could be with family, on a journey, working, or at any other ordinary or extraordinary time. The examen then asks the practitioner to notice where that was, who one was with, and what you were doing – and to move toward those moments that brought that joy.

Likewise, the examen asks us to notice the places in our life where we felt exhausted, deadened, and unlike ourselves – and make an intention to move away from those moments, trusting that our desires will lead us to an increasingly abundant life.

So as we move into the holidays, it is my desire that you and your families will pause to ask yourselves where is it that you come most alive? Where do you feel overcome with joy and gratitude? I hope you and your families get to sit in those places this next year. Make an intention to move toward the places that bring you and your family to life.

Also, as we close out yet another year, I want to thank all of our clients and community partners for another great year and appreciate all the trust you have placed in us. We are grateful for the opportunity to deliver excellence in support of you and your organizations. We look forward to continued successes in 2023.

Did you know if was once common to hang Christmas trees upside down? In parts of Austria and Germany in the 1700s, evergreen tips were brought into the home and hung top down from the ceiling, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. They were decorated with apples, nuts, sweets wrapped in shiny paper, gold-painted pine cones and red paper strips. According to folklore, the practice is rooted in the 7th century, when a Benedictine monk supposedly used the triangular shape of the inverted fir tree as a way of explaining the Holy Trinity to the pagans who he once saw worshiping an oak tree. Later, in the 19th century, people sometimes hung small trees from the rafters for a more practical reason - for lack of room.
