An Every-So-Often Update from The Town

Spring Hydrant Flush

The flushing will take place

May 12-13:

Why does Onancock Flush its hydrants?

Towns flush fire hydrants primarily to maintain the public water system's safety, quality, and reliability.

1. Maintain Water Quality

  • Over time, sediment (like iron and manganese) can settle in water mains. Flushing removes this buildup, preventing discolored or foul-tasting water and ensuring safe drinking water.

2. Ensure Hydrant Functionality

  • Flushing tests hydrants for pressure, flow, and mechanical function. It ensures hydrants work properly during a fire emergency and identifies any in need of repair or replacement.

3. Maintain Flow Rates

  • Clearing the lines helps maintain high flow rates necessary for firefighting and large water demands.

4. Regulatory Compliance

  • Health departments and environmental agencies often require periodic flushing as part of a town's water quality and maintenance protocols.

5. Prevent Stagnation

  • Flushing helps clear stagnant water in dead-end lines or areas with low usage, reducing the risk of bacterial growth and chlorine loss.

Water Repairs Bring Paving

Over the next couple of weeks (depending on weather and materials availability), the intersection of Liberty and Hill, the patch in front of the Lilliston Building, and a patch in the parking lot by the boat ramp are being paved.
