An Every-So-Often Town Update

Welcome Center and Restrooms

  • From the outside, the building at 38 Market Street looks as it has for many years. The inside is changing!
  • This building will house the Welcome Center, the Main Street offices, and all new public restrooms. This picture is front-to-back and shows where the plumbing for the new restrooms will be located.
  • The town will install a water line from Market Street that will disrupt sidewalk traffic.

Working in a deep hole standing in cold water.

Give thanks to your Public Works

  • On a cold winter weekend, the town was notified that clean water was bubbling up in the parking lot near Mallards.
  • The entire team spent all day Saturday and Sunday finding and repairing the break in the line. It turned out to be a 2" line under full pressure (imagine a fire hose) that had erupted in three different places over a 20' span and six feet underground. Thanks to you for allowing the town to invest in the right tools, but more importantly, the right people.

Important Repair

  • After we installed the new bulkhead last year, the base underneath the pavers started to fail along the edge of the new deck board. It became a trip hazard, and the town is getting it fixed.
  • The town staff is going to remove the stairs, the existing pavers, and the current subbase. We will replace the base, and install a drain along the deck board, and we have hired a concrete professional to finish the job.
  • We will close the area to all foot traffic when work begins.

Holly Street

  • The standing stormwater on Holly Street remains a problem. The town installed the required culverts and now VDOT is working to resolve the problem permanently.

Snail Mail

  • For several reasons, the mail service has been very slow. This has caused customers to receive late fees.
  • We do not want to charge these fees, but the law requires it. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Pay online. It is free and instantaneous. Pay Online
  • If you use your bank bill pay, understand that they withdraw your money right away, but it might take weeks for it to arrive.
  • Allow MUCH more time than you think is reasonable.

Miscellaneous Happenings

  • The water meter replacement is on track to begin in the Spring. Because we will read meters constantly, we will likely change to monthly billing (with full-size paper bills in envelopes!).
  • The Police Station project, the Sunset Patio project, the Dredging project, and the town hall generator project are all on schedule and budget.
  • The grant work for the Lilliston projects is moving along quickly.
  • The Planning Commission is reviewing parking rules and ordinances. They meet on 2-5-24 at 6.
  • We have a blood drive Monday, March 4 from 10 - 3.

Thank you!
