Managing Tech Ethically, Responsibly, Thoughtfully
The relatively new term digital wellbeing can be defined as "a subjective individual experience of optimal balance between the benefits and drawbacks obtained from mobile connectivity" (Vanden Abeele, 2021). More simply put, it is interacting with technology in a way that promotes mental and physical health. The "recipe" for digital wellbeing will vary widely depending on the individual, their use of technology, their lives, and their needs. For coaches helping coachees work through the discovery of their recipe -- and for coaches finding their own recipe -- coaching questions are a key tool.
This article from Baylor Scott & White Health details four areas in which we can make mindful decisions about how we interact with technology. Each one invites powerful questions that can drive exploration:
Be aware of technology use and your emotions.
- What about my use of technology is affecting my emotions negatively? Positively?
- When I need to shift my emotions in a positive direction, how can technology help?
Look at the opportunity loss.
- What am I missing out on doing or accomplishing because of time spent on technology?
- How can I change my use of technology to free up time and cognitive space for other activities I value?
Be mindful of social media and social comparison.
- What use of social media leads me to compare myself with others? How does this comparison make me feel?
- If I find I am making damaging comparisons, what action can help me shift this habit?
Stay safe with technology.
- What about my use of technology risks my safety or the safety of my personal information?
- How might use technology in a way that protects my mental health?
