67. About What Are Managers Talking?
Managing and Executing Effectively:
"Vibe: The Secrets Of Strong Connections"
In his new book, Vibe: The Secrets of Strong Connections in a Lonely World", organizational psychologist and Wharton professor Adam Grant challenges several conventional assumptions about how people develop meaningful relationships.
His central message is that strong human connections don't necessarily require years of acquaintance, shared personalities, or frequent interactions. They can develop surprisingly quickly through meaningful conversations—what he calls "deep talk."
1. Skip the small talk and move toward deep talk
Grant argues that one of the most effective ways to accelerate human connection is to move beyond superficial conversation and discuss subjects that reveal something meaningful about ourselves.
Instead of limiting conversations to the weather, sports, or routine activities, he recommends asking questions that encourage people to share their experiences, values, vulnerabilities, and perspectives.
In a recent interview, Grant explained that research suggests just eight or nine minutes of deep talk can accelerate the development of a personal bond.
Examples of deeper questions include:
- What is one of your biggest regrets, and what did you learn from it?
- What experience has most influenced the person you are today?
- What is something important about you that people often misunderstand?
- What personal or professional challenge has changed your perspective?
- What matters most to you at this stage of your life?
The objective is not to force people to reveal private information. It is to create opportunities for authentic conversation when both people are comfortable participating.
2. Three myths about building connections
Grant challenges three common beliefs:
Common belief: People must be similar to connect.
What Grant suggests: People with different backgrounds and personalities can form strong bonds.
Common belief: Instant chemistry predicts strong relationships.
What Grant suggests: Initial attraction or rapport doesn't necessarily indicate long-term compatibility.
Common belief: Close relationships always take considerable time.
What Grant suggests: Meaningful conversations can create closeness surprisingly quickly.
3. Understand the different kinds of connections
Grant distinguishes four relationship types:
- Associates: People connected through transactions, favors, or resources.
- Allies: People united by common goals and a shared mission.
- Pals: People connected through shared interests, enjoyment, and activities.
- Companions: People connected through genuine care, trust, and emotional support.
Understanding the kind of relationship people want helps them develop more appropriate and meaningful connections.
4. What this means for executives and managers
One particularly valuable insight from Vibe is that effective teams do not necessarily need employees to become close personal friends.
Grant emphasizes the importance of shared purpose, productive disagreement, psychological safety, and working together to solve meaningful problems.
He also cautions against mandatory social activities and artificial team-building exercises that employees may experience as forced bonding.
For leaders, this suggests several practical applications:
- Replace some routine icebreakers with meaningful, appropriately personal questions.
- Give employees opportunities to discuss experiences, challenges, and lessons learned.
- Build connections through collaborative problem-solving rather than relying exclusively on social activities.
- Encourage vulnerability by demonstrating openness about mistakes and lessons learned.
- Recognize that trust can develop through the quality of interactions, not simply their frequency.
5. One additional insight: Small gestures strengthen connections
Grant also discusses pebbling, a term inspired by penguins presenting pebbles during courtship.
In human relationships, pebbling might mean sending someone an article relevant to their interests, sharing something humorous, or remembering a meaningful detail about their life.
These small acts communicate that someone is remembered and valued. Grant notes that they can strengthen new relationships and rekindle old ones.
Bottom Line: We managers often believe that building stronger relationships requires more meetings, team-building activities, or time spent together. Adam Grant's new book, Vibe, suggests something different: the quality and depth of our conversations may matter far more than their frequency. By asking thoughtful questions, listening with genuine curiosity, and encouraging employees to share meaningful experiences, managers can accelerate trust, strengthen relationships, and create more connected teams. The key is not forcing personal disclosure, but making space for conversations that matter.
A question every manager should consider:
Am I spending enough time genuinely getting to know my team members, or am I allowing most of our conversations to remain focused exclusively on tasks, deadlines, and immediate problems?
Grant's overarching insight is that meaningful human connection is not merely something that happens naturally between compatible people. It is something we can intentionally cultivate through the way we interact with one another.

Facilitating Organizational Change: Turning Uncertainty into Alignment, Engagement, and Lasting Success
Organizational change is inevitable—but successfully leading people through change requires much more than a new strategy, organizational structure, technology, or set of business processes. It requires leadership alignment, employee engagement, effective communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to moving forward. Our professionally facilitated Organizational Change and Transformation Sessions help executives, leadership teams, managers, and employees successfully navigate the complexities of change while minimizing resistance, reducing uncertainty, strengthening trust, and maintaining organizational performance. Whether your organization is implementing a new strategic direction, restructuring operations, integrating teams following a merger or acquisition, introducing new technologies, transforming its culture, or responding to evolving business challenges, I provide experienced, independent facilitation that brings key stakeholders together to address concerns, explore differing perspectives, establish common priorities, and develop practical, actionable solutions. Through highly interactive discussions, collaborative problem-solving, leadership alignment exercises, and structured change-planning activities, I help organizations move beyond simply announcing change to building the understanding, ownership, accountability, and commitment necessary to make change successful. My goal is not merely to help organizations manage change, but to help their people embrace it, actively contribute to it, and emerge stronger because of it. By transforming uncertainty into clarity, resistance into engagement, and competing perspectives into shared purpose, these facilitated sessions help organizations accelerate implementation, strengthen teamwork, build organizational resilience, and create a culture capable of adapting and thriving in an ever-changing business environment. Successful organizational change doesn't happen simply because leaders announce a new direction—it happens when people understand the vision, believe in the purpose, and work together to make it a reality.
Transforming Teams into High-Performing, Collaborative, Results-Driven Organizations
Great teams don't happen by accident—they are built through trust, communication, collaboration, shared purpose, and a commitment to achieving results. Our professionally facilitated Team-Building Sessions help executives, managers, and team members move beyond everyday workplace challenges to strengthen relationships, break down silos, improve communication, resolve conflicts, and create a stronger sense of shared accountability. Whether your organization is navigating change, experiencing communication breakdowns, bringing together individuals with different personalities and working styles, or seeking to elevate an already successful team's performance, our customized, highly interactive sessions provide a valuable opportunity to step away from daily pressures, address important issues, and develop practical solutions together. Through engaging discussions, thought-provoking exercises, real-world business scenarios, and collaborative problem-solving, we help teams identify what's working, confront what's holding them back, establish clearer expectations, and build the trust and alignment necessary for sustained success. The goal isn't simply to bring people together for a team-building event—it's to help them return to work better connected, more engaged, more accountable, and better equipped to achieve extraordinary results together.
Conflict Resolution: Turning Workplace Challenges into Opportunities for Stronger Relationships, Collaboration, and Performance
Unresolved workplace conflict can undermine trust, damage relationships, weaken teamwork, reduce productivity, and prevent even the most talented individuals and teams from achieving their full potential. Yet, when addressed effectively, conflict can become a powerful catalyst for improved communication, stronger working relationships, greater understanding, and organizational growth. Our professionally facilitated Conflict Resolution Sessions help executives, managers, leadership teams, and employees navigate difficult conversations, address disagreements constructively, resolve interpersonal tensions, and move beyond the misunderstandings and competing priorities that often stand in the way of success. As an experienced, independent facilitator, I create a structured, respectful, and impartial environment in which participants can openly explore concerns, understand differing perspectives, identify underlying causes of conflict, and work collaboratively toward practical, mutually acceptable solutions. Whether your organization is experiencing friction between team members, disagreements among executives, cross-functional tensions, communication breakdowns, or challenges resulting from organizational change, each engagement is customized to address your specific circumstances and desired outcomes. My goal is not simply to resolve today's disagreements, but to help individuals and teams rebuild trust, strengthen accountability, improve collaboration, and develop the communication and conflict-management skills necessary to prevent future problems. The result is an opportunity to transform disruptive workplace conflict into stronger professional relationships, healthier team dynamics, more effective leadership, and a more productive, positive, and results-driven work environment. Don't allow unresolved conflict to become an ongoing cost to your organization—invest in professional facilitation that helps turn difficult situations into meaningful, lasting improvements.

| | BUSINESS HEADLINES: WHAT'S THE LATEST? | | |
As of Friday, October 16, 2026, these are our Top Business Stories:
Today's biggest business stories center on surging inflation, a global sell-off in AI-related stocks, rising concerns about interest rates, and disappointing results from major Wall Street banks.
Top 10 business headlines
1. Global technology stocks tumble as AI investment concerns intensify
A sharp sell-off in AI and semiconductor shares has spread worldwide. South Korea's Kospi 200 fell 8.1%, while Japan's Nikkei dropped 4.9%. Investors are questioning high AI valuations, debt levels, and the profitability of massive infrastructure investments.
2. U.S. inflation accelerates, raising pressure on the Federal Reserve
September consumer inflation reached 3.7% annually, while producer prices climbed 6.3%. The hotter-than-expected figures have renewed concerns about additional interest-rate increases and higher borrowing costs for businesses and consumers.
3. JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America miss earnings expectations
Two of America's largest banks reported weaker-than-expected quarterly profits. Investment banking activity slowed as rising yields, market volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty discouraged mergers, acquisitions, and public offerings.
4. AI data-center financing boom faces growing investor skepticism
Rising financing costs and concerns about excessive borrowing are threatening planned AI infrastructure deals. Several proposed listings have been delayed or withdrawn, with investors increasingly favoring established operators over speculative development projects.
5. TSMC reports record profits, but semiconductor stocks remain under pressure
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company delivered strong quarterly earnings, supported by AI-chip demand. Nevertheless, its U.S.-listed shares declined as investors worried about broader technology valuations and economic uncertainty.
6. U.S. unemployment claims remain historically low despite slower hiring
Initial jobless claims totaled 199,000 for the week ending October 10. Layoffs remain relatively limited, but September employment growth slowed to just 29,000 jobs, highlighting an increasingly cautious hiring environment.
7. Federal Reserve officials signal patience on further rate hikes
Fed Vice Chair Michelle Bowman said policymakers have time to evaluate economic conditions before taking additional action. Other officials have similarly cautioned against rushing into another increase, despite inflation remaining elevated.
8. Strong consumer spending complicates the inflation outlook
September retail sales exceeded expectations, while gasoline prices helped drive higher spending totals. The combination of resilient demand and increasing prices is making the Federal Reserve's inflation challenge more difficult.
9. CoreWeave and other AI infrastructure companies face debt scrutiny
Investors are reassessing the financial risks of AI cloud infrastructure companies. CoreWeave has experienced significant share-price volatility as concerns grow about its debt burden and ability to finance expansion.
10. International Monetary Fund warns of risks from an AI market correction
The IMF has raised concerns that a substantial correction in AI-related valuations could threaten financial stability beyond the technology industry, with Asian markets particularly exposed.
What business leaders should be watching:
Issue: Rising inflation
Implications for executives and managers: Revisit budgets, supplier pricing, and operating margins.
Issue: Interest-rate uncertainty
Implications for executives and managers: Reevaluate borrowing, capital investments, and expansion plans.
Issue: AI market volatility
Implications for executives and managers: Demand measurable returns from AI initiatives and infrastructure spending.
Issue: Slowing hiring
Implications for executives and managers: Strengthen workforce planning, retention, and productivity.
Issue: Weaker dealmaking
Implications for executives and managers: Reassess acquisition timing, financing assumptions, and growth strategies.
The overarching business story today: The economy continues to show resilience in consumer spending and employment, but higher inflation, financing costs, and uncertainty surrounding AI investments are increasing pressure on corporate decision-making.
- For executives and managers, the immediate priority is balancing growth and innovation with financial discipline and risk management.

Today's AI Business Headlines
These are today's top AI business headlines for Friday, October 16, 2026:
Today's AI business news is dominated by a major sell-off in AI stocks, Anthropic's extraordinary revenue growth, increasing concerns about AI infrastructure financing, and growing regulatory scrutiny of AI companies.
Here are 10 important developments for executives, managers, investors, and organizations adopting artificial intelligence.
Top 10 AI business headlines
1. Nvidia and semiconductor stocks fall as investors question AI spending
Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and Micron are under pressure as investors reconsider the enormous amounts being spent on AI infrastructure. The semiconductor ETF SOXX is headed toward its eighth consecutive daily decline, its longest losing streak in 11 years.
2. Anthropic reports $16.8 billion in quarterly revenue ahead of anticipated IPO
Anthropic, developer of Claude, reportedly generated $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue and reached adjusted profitability. Although revenue grew approximately 45% from the previous quarter, the growth rate slowed significantly from earlier in the year. The company is reportedly preparing for a November stock market listing.
3. AI data-center financing boom faces a major test
Rising borrowing costs and investor skepticism are making it more difficult to finance AI infrastructure. Several planned public offerings have been delayed or withdrawn. Investors are increasingly favoring established data-center operators with dependable contracts over speculative projects.
4. TSMC delivers another record quarter on AI-chip demand
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing reported its sixth consecutive record quarterly profit, reflecting continued demand for advanced processors. The strong operating performance contrasts with declining investor confidence in semiconductor valuations.
5. CoreWeave's debt raises concerns about the economics of AI cloud computing
Investors are scrutinizing CoreWeave's substantial financial obligations amid rising interest rates. The company's leadership has pointed to a reported $100 billion revenue backlog, but questions persist about the cost of financing rapid expansion.
6. FTC subpoenas OpenAI and Anthropic over AI safety and consumer protection
The Federal Trade Commission has demanded records concerning AI safety incidents, security safeguards, privacy policies, and marketing practices. The investigation could increase legal and compliance pressure on leading AI developers.
7. Anthropic gives independent researchers unprecedented access to evaluate AI risks
Anthropic is granting the nonprofit METR expanded access to its internal systems to independently assess AI safety. The arrangement could establish a new model for outside oversight of powerful AI systems.
8. Amazon introduces new personal AI devices
Amazon's Bee business has introduced two personal AI devices, with pricing starting at $75. The announcement illustrates the growing competition to move AI assistants beyond conventional smartphone and computer interfaces.
9. Ricursive Intelligence introduces AI technology to design better AI chips
Ricursive Intelligence is developing systems that use artificial intelligence to automate and optimize semiconductor design. Its approach could help reduce design bottlenecks and accelerate development of the computing hardware needed for increasingly powerful AI.
10. Figma expands support for AI agents in digital design workflows
Figma has announced new capabilities for defining how AI agents operate within its platform. The development reflects the broader shift from AI tools that simply generate content toward agents that participate directly in business workflows.
What these developments mean for executives and managers
Three major trends stand out:
- AI investment is entering a more demanding financial phase. Investors increasingly want measurable returns, sustainable financing, and credible profitability rather than growth projections alone.
- AI governance is becoming a boardroom priority. The FTC investigation reinforces the importance of oversight, data protection, incident response, and accountability for autonomous AI systems.
- AI is moving further into everyday operations. Developments in design software, personal assistants, and semiconductor engineering demonstrate how AI is becoming integrated into actual work processes.
A question worth discussing with your management team: Are we evaluating AI initiatives primarily by their technological capabilities, or by their measurable contributions to productivity, profitability, customer service, and organizational effectiveness?

These works have crossed our desk lately, which we have not been able to put down:
"Confidence Game: How Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman Called Wall Street's Bluff", by Christine S. Richard
In "Confidence Game: How Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman Called Wall Street’s Bluff", financial journalist Christine S. Richard tells the riveting true story of one investor who challenged Wall Street’s conventional wisdom—and ultimately proved that some of its most trusted institutions were standing on dangerously shaky ground. Years before the 2008 financial crisis erupted, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman became convinced that bond-insurance giant MBIA and the broader $2.5 trillion bond-insurance industry were taking risks the market, regulators, and credit-rating agencies had dramatically underestimated. What followed was an extraordinary six-year battle in which Ackman faced fierce criticism, regulatory scrutiny, and accusations that he was simply trying to profit by frightening investors—yet he continued assembling evidence and publicly making his case. When the credit crisis finally exposed many of the vulnerabilities he had warned about, Ackman’s investors reportedly earned more than $1 billion. Part financial thriller, part character study, and part cautionary tale about groupthink, leverage, misplaced confidence, and the danger of blindly trusting accepted wisdom, Confidence Game offers a fascinating look at what can happen when one determined skeptic is willing to question what nearly everyone else on Wall Street believes to be true.
"The Meaning Of Your Life: Finding Purpose In An Age Of Emptiness", by Arthur C. Brooks
If you struggle to discern life’s meaning, you’re not alone. Millions today describe a growing sense of emptiness, a lack of purpose and significance. And there’s a reason: Rapid cultural, economic, and technological changes have rewired our brains, reducing their ability to perceive depth and purpose.
In The Meaning of Your Life, social scientist and happiness expert Arthur C. Brooks shows you how to push back against these changes and find the meaning you need to live a happy, fulfilling life. Relying on cutting-edge science, he offers practical, evidence-based strategies for breaking free of the powerful trends and personal habits that dull your focus on the why of your life. “What is the meaning of my life?” is not an unanswerable question, but rather the start of a pilgrimage into unexplored corners of your consciousness. The Meaning of Your Life is your handbook for this journey.

Building on his popular Harvard Business School course "Leadership and Happiness," Brooks begins each essay with sharp observations and behavioral science research that shed light on how happiness really works, then offers experiential wisdom and practical advice. Beautifully written, the essays range from ancient philosophy to literature, pop culture, and the contemporary world of work. They explore topics and challenges such as "Procrastinate This, Not That," "Why Success Can Feel So Bitter," and "Five Pillars of a Good Life." "Disrupt Everything: The Proven And Effective Way To Harness Change Into A Force For Success", by James Patterson and Patrick Luddin, Ph.D.
Disruption is the most powerful force of change in our lifetime.
Every day we are confronted with:
- Sudden pivots at our workplace and in the job market
- Rule-changing technology such as Artificial Intelligence
- Unexpected crises and a culture of chaos
- The sinking feeling that we are losing control of our lives
This book is about taking back control. It’s easy to follow and easy to turn into lifelong habits. It has been thoroughly researched and examined. Simply put, Disrupt Everything works.
"The Creative Shift: How To Power Up Your Organization By Making Space For New Ideas", by Andrew Robertson, Chairman of BBDO Worldwide
"An essential brass-tacks guide to delivering and successfully executing one groundbreaking idea after another, without interrupting business as usual." - Frederick W. Smith, founder and executive chairman, FedEx
How can organizations prioritize innovation and execute new ideas, while also continuing to do what they do best? We want Mercedes to be careful, methodical, and risk-averse when testing their vehicles. But we also want them to be able to remove their blinders when envisioning next-generation car technology. How can a company strike a balance between operation and exploration?
Andrew Robertson, the CEO of BBDO, an advertising firm considered to be the gold standard of creativity, knows that it is critical to conduct business as usual while pursuing business unusual. Most companies focus on the former, while giving lip service to the latter. In The Creative Shift, Robertson offers the tools to help individuals, teams, and companies switch into creative mode, seamlessly and effectively, including:
- Developing a common language to convey when a creative shift is needed;
- Generating an array of possibilities and applying them onto your problem until something clicks;
- Managing unhelpful personality traits;
- Properly incentivizing and protecting creative contributions;
- Getting out into the world to “forage” for ideas.
This book is for every manager, leader, and entrepreneur who needs to rally a team, an organization, or themselves to think big and keep the flame of invention burning brightly while under suffocating pressure—which happens to be when you need creative problem-solving the most.

CHANGE MANAGEMENT 2026 INTO 2027:
THE COMPLETE GUIDE -
WEBINAR, WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28
| | |
Change is no longer an occasional initiative - it is the operating environment. As organizations move from 2026 into 2027, leaders and managers are being asked to navigate AI-driven transformation, shifting workforce expectations, new operating models, cost and productivity pressures, reorganizations, evolving customer demands, and an accelerating pace of technology adoption - often simultaneously. This practical, fast-moving 90-minute webinar provides a complete guide to leading change with greater clarity, speed, engagement, and accountability. Participants will learn how to diagnose the real change challenge, build a compelling case for action, anticipate resistance, communicate through uncertainty, engage managers and employees, sustain performance during transition, and turn change from a disruptive event into an organizational capability. Whether you are leading a major transformation or helping a team adapt to continuous change, this session will provide immediately usable frameworks, questions, tools, and action steps for making change work in 2026, 2027, and beyond.
Learning Objectives - What You Will Learn
By participating, you will:
- Understand what is different about change management as organizations move from 2026 into 2027 - and why traditional, linear change approaches are often insufficient.
- Distinguish between the technical side of change and the human side of change, and understand why both must be managed together.
- Assess change readiness, stakeholder impact, organizational capacity, and the risks that can derail an initiative before implementation begins.
- Build a clear and credible case for change that answers the questions employees and managers are really asking: Why this? Why now? What does it mean for me?
- Identify the most common sources of resistance - including uncertainty, loss of control, workload concerns, change fatigue, skills gaps, distrust, and competing priorities - and respond constructively.
- Create a practical stakeholder and influence strategy that identifies sponsors, champions, skeptics, key influencers, and groups most affected by the change.
- Communicate change with greater transparency and consistency, including how to communicate when decisions are incomplete, circumstances are changing, or leaders do not yet have all the answers.
- Equip frontline and middle managers to become effective translators, coaches, and reinforcement agents rather than passive messengers of change.
- Use AI and digital tools appropriately to support change analysis, communication, training, feedback, knowledge sharing, and adoption while preserving human judgment and trust.
- Protect productivity, psychological safety, employee engagement, and organizational capacity during periods of significant transition.
- Measure adoption and business impact using leading and lagging indicators - not simply whether implementation milestones were completed.
- Develop a practical 30-60-90 day roadmap for moving a change initiative from announcement through adoption, reinforcement, and sustained results.

- Using pulse feedback and adoption data to make course corrections
- Avoiding vanity metrics that measure activity rather than impact
13. A Practical 30-60-90 Day Change Roadmap

- Days 31-60: engage, communicate, prepare managers, build capability, test, and gather feedback
