Barley Market Report: Tight Stocks, Bigger Questions

StatsCan's latest numbers confirm what the trade suspected: barley stocks are tight. July 31st stocks came in at 940,400 tonnes — the lowest in three years — as record 2025/26 demand (10.19 mln tonnes of usage, 3.50 mln tonnes of exports) drew down what had started as the largest supply since 2020/21. LeftField notes that “the big supply-big demand season in 2025/26 means there wasn’t a large cushion coming into the current marketing year,” and with the prairie harvest running slow and wet, how much of this year’s crop makes malt grade could be the biggest swing factor for 2026/27 prices.
