Tip! You can visit both the Woodbridge Farmstead and the Cheney Homestead on the same day, Sunday, August 11. Your visit to Woodbridge could be 10, 20, 30 or more minutes. Then, zip across town to the Homestead. The "weather" talk is at 1:30, but the open house is 1:00 -4:00. Come any time, stroll the grounds, see the heirloom-style gardens, talk with our volunteers. Sunday, August 11, 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., a Peachy Keen day, making homemade peach ice cream, along with a food discussion and display of summer's bounty of fruits and vegetables. Imagination Playground will pay a visit with Foam Building blocks.
Sunday, August 25, 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m., celebrating Women's Equality Day-- we'll demonstrate some of the tasks of 19th-century farm women, such as washing clothes, sewing, and cooking. The Woodbridge barn is located at 495 East Middle Turnpike. Visit: Woodbridge poster for details of where to park, etc.

“Weather Chaos 1816: The Year With No Summer”
Sunday, August 11 , from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Cheney Homestead Museum, 106 Hartford Road, Manchester. At 2:00 p.m., special guest Tim Lavigne, Emmy-nominated and AP Award-winning meteorologist, formerly of Channel 61, will share the bizarre events that caused summer snows and crop failures in New England and across Europe. We will relate the impact to the young family at the Homestead. Stay for a tour of the 1785 house, gardens, and grounds and “Art, Ingenuity & Early American Life,” learning about 19th century life and art. Free. Donations welcome.

Observational Drawing Thursdays 9:30-12:30, beginning September 5 and designed to complement a home-schooling curriculum. Six-week sessions.

Art in Manchester on TV --
Watch on your computer or on TV during August: "Art in Manchester,” a 50-minute television program with examples of gifted artists who worked in Manchester: artists, architects, educators, and organizers. The show airs Saturdays at 12:00 noon and 8:00 p.m. on Cox cable channel 15 on Saturdays, and runs on all the Saturdays of the month. The show changes each month. This Channel 15 broadcasts in Manchester, Glastonbury, South Windsor, Wethersfield, Rocky Hill and Newington. Or watch on Public Access website Public Access TV -- choose Manchester Schedule, and then put "Historical" into the Search Box.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to search, for free, in the old Manchester Evening Herald archives, no matter where you live? Good news! The Manchester Historical Society is working on a project to convert 372 microfilm rolls to a digital, indexed format available online. We welcome you to donate to this fund-raising effort to pay for the technology conversion. Any amount from $1 up will be gratefully received. The overall goal is $10,000 to cover all costs. We can do this! You may drop by with cash or a check to the History Center (Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 to 2:00), or mail a check to: Manchester Historical Society, 175 Pine Street, Manchester CT 06040, with a NOTE (important!) on the check: for the Herald project!
