What Can We Really Control?
| | We all worry. We worry about work, our kids, our health, our parents, the planet, what others think, etc. The list of worries is never ending. Worrying is our brain's way of working through problems, but it can also be an endless loop. When we feel like this worry loop is taking over, it's helpful to pause and consider what we can and cannot control. Once we distinguish this difference, we can begin to release the grip on worrying about what we can't control. We can then start taking steps towards shifting what we can actually control and making changes in our lives. | | | |
The Circle of Control exercise can help differentiate between these two categories, what we can and cannot control. Notice if you're fixating on elements of life that are out of your control, such as others' actions, past decisions, or external validation. It's normal to have strong feelings about things we can't control. The progress is in noticing these feelings and refocusing efforts to what can be controlled or changed.
The next time you notice yourself caught in a worry loop, try the Circle of Control exercise below.
