Spring Forward by Stepping Back

Warmer weather, time off from school, and blooming flowers...spring is here! For many, this is the time for new routines and habits. Let's pause, step back, and reflect on what new routines you might be ready to try this season.

Longer days and more sunlight can boost energy and mood, but the seasonal shift can temporarily throw off sleep, focus, and emotional balance for both adults and kids. It's important to step outside daily. Sunlight and fresh air reset energy. Try to keep your routines consistent, particularly regarding sleep and mealtimes, even when school is out. Schedules provide a sense of calm and peace, especially for kids. Pause, breathe, and be patient. Short, mindful breaks help keep everyone grounded.

For those who are feeling overworked and overstimulated, especially regarding the demands of parenting, maybe less is more. Here are some strategies to help you support your family in navigating new habits:

  • Give them a chance to figure it out - Kids benefit less when you commandeer the game for them or over schedule every second of the day.
  • Back off, and then keep backing off - You can make a list of activities your child can do when they're "bored," but the ultimate goal is for them to figure it out for themselves, and then go do it. This is how self-sufficiency begins to form. Don't let your discomfort interrupt their growth!
  • Lead by example - Let your kids know that downtime is important to you by doing just that. Take a half hour to read a book on the couch, do a puzzle at the kitchen table, or watch the birds outside at the bird feeder. Stay off your electronic devices and show them how to relax.
