September 12, 2024 | Camp Manidokan celebrates 75 years

Manidokan celebrates 75th anniversary with remembrance and an IGNITE bonfire Sept. 22

Manidokan, in the Algonquin language, means "Lodge of the Great Spirit." On Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., Camp Manidokan will celebrate its 75th year as a United Methodist Camping and Retreat Center.

Manidokan, located on the Potomac River near Harper's Ferry, W.Va., began in the 1920s when 30 acres of land were donated by a Methodist family to be used as the Boy Scout's Camp Po-Wa-Ma. It featured a big log cabin lodge, six smaller cabins, and a swimming pool fed by Saw Mill Creek. Several years later, the Baltimore Conference bought the property.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 22, the celebration includes:

  • Snacks and the best of Manidokan's food in the dining hall,
  • Walking tour of Manidokan’s history, along with recent and upcoming facility improvements,
  • Self-guided hikes throughout the property,
  • Opportunities to purchase hats, sweatshirts, stickers, mugs and more at the camp store, and
  •  The climbing wall and aerial park will be open.

At 4 p.m., there will be worship at Campfire Hill, where there will be memories of the past and reflections on the future, followed by s'mores and a group photo.

The anniversary celebration will also include a look forward to IGNITE, a Baltimore-Washington and Peninsula-Delaware Area Youth Conference, which will be held March 7-9 in Ocean City. The IGNITE bonfire will provide a preview of the church's future and this exciting new youth event.

Let the retreat and camping staff know you'll be attending by filling out this Google form.

Please note: participation in the climbing wall and aerial park requires a waiver. Make sure to sign up using the Google Form to get a copy of the waiver ahead of time. Waivers must be signed by parents/guardians for participants who are minors.
