38 yearlings up for sale on Sunday, August 20
Justlemmeatem, a 2-year-old Manitoba-bred bay gelding by Vengeful Wildcat-Siphon Vice by Siphon, wins the 35th running of the $40,000 CTHS Sales Stakes on Monday at ASD for trainer Devon Gittens, owner/breeder Dr. Betty Hughes, and groom Skyla Blanchard. It’s dream time again!

The annual Manitoba CTHS Yearling Sale takes place on Sunday, August 20 at 2:30 p.m. on the Red River Ex Grounds. Thirty-eight yearlings by 10 sires from 20 different consignors will go on the auction block on Sunday, and you can view all of them starting on Saturday, August 19 at 10 a.m.

Everyone will be looking for another Escape Clause ($866,100 earnings, $5,000 purchase price), Fancy As ($670,092, $3,200) or Hidden Grace ($309,671, $15,000), and there may very well be one. Or more!
Manitoba-bred 3-year-old gelding Private Frank (Going Commando-Inspeightofsuccess by Speightstown) has won four in a row including the $40,000 Frank Arnason Memorial Sire Stakes for trainer Tom Gardipy, Jr. and owners Jerry Lambert and Lynn Mathews. Ronald Ali up. (Jason Halstead photo)
The performances of more recently raced bargains such as Frank Arnason Memorial Sire Stakes winner Private Frank (Going Commando), who was a $1,000 buyback in the 2021 sale; R. C Anderson Memorial Stakes winner Russian Pearl (Nonios), who could have been had for $1,000 in the same sale; and CTHS Sales Stakes winner Justlemmeatem (Vengeful Wildcat), who was only bid up to $3,500 in the 2022 sale; are sure to generate even more attention among buyers.

Three-year-olds Private Frank and Russian Pearl have already earned over $50,000 and 2-year-old Justlemmeatem has earned over $30,000 in his first year at the track.
Manitoba-bred 3-year-old filly Russian Pearl (Nonios-Russian Jewel by Wildcat Heir) wins the $40,000 R.C. Anderson Memorial Stakes for trainer Devon Gittens, owner-breeder Larry Falloon and ownership partner Ron Wiley. Damario Bynoe up. (Jason Halstead photo)
Proven Manitoba sire Nonios leads all stallions in the sale with 16 yearlings, followed by new sire Speculating with eight. Additional sires with more than one yearling in the sale include Kentucky Bear (4 yearlings) Vengeful Wildcat (3) and Souper Speedy (2). Speculating’s first crop of weanlings were real beauties, and they have apparently become even better looking as yearlings.

Fourteen of the yearlings have black type in the first dam, but there a number that have some hidden gems in their overall pedigrees, and of course there are some cool names like Prairie Thunder (Hip #8), Amma Jaw Dropper (Hip #14), Smarticus (Hip #19), Terrible Tillie (Hip #29), Born In a Blizzard (Hip #33) and our personal favourite, Rugged Rooster (Hip #28).

If we’ve learned anything from previous local yearling sales, it’s that Manitoba breeding and racing bonuses make everyone who purchases a Manitoba-bred a winner, and name players have just as good a shot of picking a stakes winner as the pros.

Horses can fool you.

A Snapshot in Time

Over the next several weeks we are going to salute previous winners of the Gold Cup. The winner of the 8th running of the Cup will kick things off. On August 2, 1965, Already Dia whipped a solid field while carrying a massive 128 pounds. No previous winner of the race had ever been asked to haul that kind of impost 1 1/8-miles. Jockey “Dickie” Armstrong was aboard for the ride with the connections gathering in the special winner’s circle located in the infield for the presentation ceremonies. (Bob Barnes Photo)
Kalik is tabbed as the 3-1 morning-line favourite; card also features the Dance Smartly, Catch a Glimpse and Soaring Free Stakes
Seventeen sophomores, including Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser winner Elysian Field, and Plate Trial victor Paramount Prince, both trained by dual hall of famer Mark Casse, will contest the $1 million King’s Plate, first leg of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown, highlighting an outstanding stakes-filled Sunday card of racing at Woodbine. The 47th Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame ceremony was on August 9 and new members for 2022 and 2023 were welcomed

Mr. and Mrs. Racing bought and sold Assiniboia Downs twice. This husband and wife team helped to shape the future of the Downs more than any other individuals. It's quite possible that the Downs’ very existence would have been doomed without them. Click here to learn more about the people who were front and center holding the Downs together when times were tough.
