Dear Manna,

As May gives way to June, the energy of the approaching summer is unmistakable here in Montgomery County. The days are stretching longer, the sun is shining brighter, and at Manna, we’re feeling that same sense of renewed purpose and excitement.

We’ve been especially energized by recent visits from our state representatives. Governor Wes Moore and Comptroller Brooke Lierman made visits to our warehouse and market respectively. Their presence and support mean so much to us at Manna, reminding us that our mission to fight hunger is shared across our community and our leadership. Every conversation we were able to have underscores the importance of the work we do together.

Speaking of coming together, we’re thrilled to announce that our annual Ride On Food Drive is here! From now till May 31st, ride the bus for free – just bring a can to donate! Every contribution helps us go the extra mile in the fight against hunger. Check out the details below and join us in whatever way moves you!

Our staff has been busy, too. We just wrapped up our most successful Heroes Against Hunger Awards yet—an inspiring evening honoring those who go above and beyond for food security in our county. And our recent visit to the FRAC Anti-Hunger Conference has invigorated us with fresh ideas and new connections, strengthening our resolve to serve our neighbors.

Now, we’re looking to you to be a part of this vibrant community. Tomorrow, we kick off our Give Greater DC peer-to-peer fundraiser, where every gift will be matched up to $54,000! This is a unique opportunity to double your impact and help us reach even more families this summer. Read on for more information on how to take part and donate.

In these unprecedented times, we simply couldn’t do what we do without you—our supporters, volunteers, and partners. Thank you for standing with us. Enjoy the longer days, savor the season, and don’t forget to check out our new summer recipe below for a little inspiration in the kitchen!

With gratitude,

Craig Rice

CEO, Manna Food Center

PS: The House passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a devastating decision that puts millions of kids and families at risk of hunger and hardship. This budget reconciliation bill cuts roughly $300 billion from SNAP. But, it’s not over — and we have hope! Now more than ever is the time to speak up and advocate for kids by calling your Representative.

SNAP may be on the line, but we’re not giving up this fight. Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, or visit NoKidHungry.org/CallCongress

Governor and Comptroller of Maryland Visit Manna Locations

Recently, Manna has been lucky to welcome both Governor Wes Moore and Comptroller Brooke Lierman to our facilities. We appreciate our state government officials coming to see our operations firsthand, and to join our conversation around the importance of food security.

Ride On Food Drive May 25th – May 31st

The Annual Ride On Food Drive is happening and runs through May 31!

Ride for FREE when you donate a non-perishable food item onboard any Ride On bus. Help us stock Manna’s shelves. Just drop it in the donation bag as you board! If you don't ride the bus - contribute at one of our other drop off locations.

Heroes Against Hunger 2025

Our Annual Heroes Against Hunger Awards was a big success! Thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed our night of celebrations.

Join Us for Give Greater DC on May 28!

Right now, families across Montgomery County—including many federal workers and local business employees—are turning to Manna for help as federal budget cuts ripple through our community. Over 40% of residents are at risk of food insecurity, and more neighbors than ever are caught in the gap, earning too much to qualify for assistance but not enough to keep up with rising costs. On May 28, Manna is participating in Give Greater DC, and thanks to a generous $54,000 match, every dollar you give will be doubled to provide twice as many meals. Your support enables us to provide nutritious food to the community, offer alternative cash support to families facing reduced benefits, and provide consistent, dignified access to food for all.

You can make a difference: donate, start a fundraising page, or share your story about why Manna matters to you.

Food Research Action Center’s Anti-Hunger Policy Conference

Several Manna staff were able to attend the Food Research Action Center’s Anti-Hunger Policy Conference earlier this month. They attended sessions protecting and strengthening SNAP and many more insightful discussions with others in the anti-hunger space. The conference ended with a lobbying day on Capitol Hill, where staff and board members joined other Maryland advocates to speak to our representatives in Congress like Jamie Raskin on the most impactful policies we believe will support our communities.
