Revised Waste Reduction Legislation in Ontario May be Back on the Table

In 2013, Provision Coalition took part in consultations on the propo sed Waste Reduction Act, Bill 91 and participated in the industry-based Coalition for Effective Waste Reduction in Ontario,  which submitted a response  to the Ministry of Environment. Shortly after, Bill 91 failed to find a consensus and died on the legislative table when the provincial election was called.


Recently, Provision Coalition again became engaged in industry discussions to learn more about the anticipated Fall 2015 tabling of the revised waste reduction legislation. Last month, Provision staff and members joined an Ontario Chamber of Commerce roundtable discussion aimed at preparing industry for anticipated changes to Ontario's current waste diversion regime. 


These legislative changes will impact most Ontario food and beverage processing businesses, as it will significantly change the Blue Box and other waste diversion programs in Ontario. 


Other than Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) discussions hosted this past Spring on a proposed Waste Reduction and Resource Recovery Policy Framework, there has been no further documentation from government to date. On September 18, 2015, Provision Coalition has been invited to attend an MOECC food sector consultation to review a draft strategy and roadmap for implementing a proposed new Resource Recovery and Waste Reduction Act
