MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

April 22, 2024

Today is Earth Day, a day to reflect upon the glories of nature and our stewardship of the environment. While we have significant and ever-evolving challenges before us, I’m excited that more manufacturing is coming back to the United States and to Delaware in particular. As manufacturers exit countries that have flimsy environmental management, we have an opportunity to modernize and upgrade manufacturing processes with an eye toward improved environmental stewardship. This coming industrial expansion will help our supply chain issues, provide great workforce opportunities, and lead to better air and water quality management. This is good news for our environment and economy. Manufacturing in 2024 looks nothing like manufacturing of 1974, so as long as we take measured steps, we can grow our economy and clean our environment at the same time.

News You Can Use

Economic news this week gets started tomorrow morning with the release of new home sales figures from March. On Wednesday we’ll learn about durable-goods orders for March, while wholesale and retail inventory data are on tap for Thursday. Friday will bring us personal income and personal spending results from March and an early look at consumer sentiment for April.

While this is a relatively quiet week for economic data, it’s a very busy week for companies with earnings calls. Verizon Communications, Truist Financial, and Albertsons are scheduled today. Tesla, Fiserv, Haliburton, Lockheed Martin, Phillip Morris International, Quest Diagnostics, Visa, and UPS are among the many scheduled for Tuesday. AT&T, Biogen, Navient, Meta Platforms, Ford Motor, Sallie Mae, and Waste Management are among the dozens scheduled on Wednesday. American Airlines, AstraZeneca, Comcast, Dow, Merck, Valero Energy, Microsoft, Boston Beer Co., Fair Isaac, Robert Half, and Exxon Mobil will have calls later this week.
