simplycyberSimply Cyber (vol 22): Minding - or Mining? - the Supply Chain Gap

Jennifer Kurtz, Cyber Program Director, Manufacturer's Edge
As a child I heeded (mostly) Haven Gillespie's advice about watching out, not pouting, not crying-I knew which of Santa Claus's lists I wanted to be on! My motivation was clear: opening the gifts I wanted under the tree.

The motivation for minding the supply chain gap with respect to resiliency, security, and trust is similar in that the wrong people may be opening our "gifts". Our adversaries (e.g., competitors, nation-states and para-nation states, organized crime, opportunistic digital thieves) are mining the supply chain gap. That is, they are leveraging the investment that US taxpayers-individuals and organizations-are making in research and development. They are also stealing directly from manufacturing businesses. They are naughty, not nice, and we all need to watch out for them. The US Department of Defense (DoD) is especially concerned and has captured this concern in its push for the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification program. Manufacturers throughout the defense and aerospace supply chain, in particular, are paying attention-and watching out.

As customers, we question delivery terms and complain when packages arrive late. We challenge service charges on auto and home repair bills. We expect products and services to be delivered on time, at the agreed-upon price, and in a pre-defined condition. (With respect to the latter, we accept "buyer beware," "individual results may vary," "as is," and "gently used" when time, cost, and convenience seem to merit it.)

But what happens when the customer is the US Government and the expectation is that the product or service will deliver unique performance and the reality is that it contains "covered defense information" or "controlled unclassified information"? (...)

jpmJPM Prototype Receives Manufacturing Award from the Department of Defense and NIST-MEP
JPM Prototype & Mfg. (located in Colorado Springs) is one of 11 companies selected across the United States and Puerto Rico for funding under Task 2 of a DoD/NIST MEP interagency agreement signed in late spring of 2019. The objective of the task is to "provide defense contractors with the technical assistance they need to help ensure that they have implemented adequate security to protect CUI as required by DFARS cybersecurity requirements contained in DoD contracts". Under the terms of the agreement, work will be completed by December 31, 2020, and will include multiple vulnerability scans by DoD's preferred vulnerability management provider, Tenable. The value of services to be delivered under the award is estimated to be at least $25,000. Manufacturer's Edge recommended 16 different Colorado-based companies for consideration.

JPM is just one of the valued vendors in the DoD and aerospace supply chain located in the State of Colorado.  The majority of its work is for DoD and medical device sectors. Customers include DoD primes (e.g., Boeing, General Dynamics, Phillips), Intel (wafer component level), and GPS Source (for which JPM is a prime vendor). NOTE: The components produced here are installed for DoD missions across services and agencies, and include essential satellite tracking (PNT or positioning, navigation, timing) functions.

camaThe CAMA Conversation
by Dave Jeffrey, Chair of the Colorado Advanced Manufacturing Association
Dave Jeffrey, CEO & Owner, JPM Prototype & Mfg, Inc.
If you haven't noticed, it is a great time to be in manufacturing. I heard an economic report this morning that said that consumer spending for the holiday season will top one trillion dollars for the first time in history. Unemployment is at an all-time low, and the economic outlook for 2020 is great.

So, what are you doing to ride this wave? As I travel around the state, I am seeing some incredible innovations and game changing technology enter our shop floors, and manufacturers are busier than they have been for a decade.

Be proud of your accomplishments and show us the advancements you are making. In 2020, CAMA is excited to partner with the Colorado Manufacturing Awards (CMAs) to sponsor the Advanced Manufacturing and Machining Award. We are looking for the best in Advanced Manufacturing. You may self-nominate or nominate another company. Nominees compete for three finalist spots, and the winning company will be announced on April 2nd at the 2020 CMA Gala in Denver.

Together, let's make the beginning of the new decade the best for all of the manufacturers in our great state of Colorado.
