"I couldn't be more proud of our ADAPT team. If you were at the open house you saw what they have done in six months! It's incredible and Colorado should be proud!"  - Heidi Hostetter, ADAPT Center Industry Board Chair

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who joined us on June 23rd when the ADAPT Center opened its doors to the world.  The ADAPT Center is a research & development organization dedicated to the development of next-generation data informatics and advanced characterization technologies for additive manufacturing. These tools are used to help industry and government qualify, standardize, assess, and optimize advanced manufacturing processes and parts.

Representatives from all the founding members of ADAPT were in attendance along with industry leaders, students, media and others who are interested in the work being done. ADAPT also welcomed Reaction Systems as the first member of the Center! Follow ADAPT on Facebook to stay up to date on the world of Additive Manufacturing and events related to the industry.

The City of Longmont and the Longmont Economic Development Partnership host our next edition of Beers & Gears. We will be touring Custom Microwave, a Manufacturer's Edge transformational company. They will discuss the progress and changes made under our guidance and show off technology pioneered for the aerospace industry. There will also be tours of Longmont's TinkerMill, where several small manufacturing companies share work space and innovate new techniques and technology for many industries.

We will conclude the tours with one of Colorado's finest microbreweries, Left Hand Brewing Company. Left Hand has been producing award-winning innovative beers since 1994, and is excited to showcase its facility and processes, and of course, the beer.

This event is sponsored by BKD CPAs & AdvisorsEvery year at the Colfax Marathon, BKD sponsors the "Manufacturer's Cup" contest, where teams from manufacturers around the state compete in the marathon for the honor of making their facility the home of the Manufacturer's Cup trophy. The trophy will be awarded by BKD to the winner of the Manufacturer's Cup during the happy hour session following the tours.

Leg-connectDid You Miss Legislative Connect? Watch the Video!
Our first Legislative Connect event was a huge success! Congresswoman Diana DeGette moderated a wide-ranging discussion that touched on a number of important topics including millennials in the workforce, women mentoring women, and the importance of technology in driving the Colorado economy.  As the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S House of Representatives, Congresswoman DeGette brought a unique perspective to the role that women, especially engineers and manufacturers, play in driving and building the diverse economy we see in Colorado today.  Geotech Environmental Equipment provided an excellent networking lunch and tours of their state-of-the-art facility.  If you were unable to attend, you can view the video of the panel provided by ICOSA Media and the Colorado Business Round Table on our YouTube Channel,  or catch a short highlight on our Facebook page

We would especially like to thank our panelists- Mickele Bragg, Product Manager at Geotech Environmental EquipmentDeiadra D. Swartz,  Senior Manager with  Jeppesen Global Trade Control, and Jennifer Van Bark, Director, Business Operations at PneumatiCoat Technologies, LLC.

We are currently in the planning stages for our next event, and if you are interested in hosting it at your facility we want to hear from you! Email our Marketing Manager, Nathan Morimitsu for details and  watch our Newsletter and Social Media for information on attending our next Legislative Connect event.

BREXIT BREXIT:
An Opportunity for Colorado Companies or a Skyfall?

The United Kingdom's shocking affirmative vote to leave the European Union on June 23, 2016 (a.k.a. The Brexit) has been coined by outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron as the 'Gamble of the Century.' While the vote surprised most Brits and the rest of the world, and led to the British Pound taking a historic plunge just following the election, I hardly think this is 'Skyfall' for trade with the UK.

The day after the vote, several reporters called and asked if this vote, along with the negative sentiment on trade portrayed in this year's U.S. election, will trigger a contagious anti-globalization movement around the world. I hardly think this is the case. International trade is one of those topics that is convenient to blame for local job losses and economic hardships, but as most educated voters know, there is much more to the story. Respectively, the strength of the dollar and advancements in technology far outweigh the impact of weaker sales and decreased jobs in our market. Globalization is here to stay whether you are an advocate for it or not. Colorado firms and consumers both benefit daily from sourcing goods from those countries with a competitive advantage, making products cheaper to buy, improving our bottom lines, and helping to maintain jobs in our state.

The UK will plan its exit from the European Union over the next three years, so there will not be an immediate change in trade with Colorado's second largest market within Europe and ninth largest overall. Additionally, the UK is Colorado's number one source of foreign direct investment, providing over 133,000 jobs,  so we won't see a mass exit on that front either.
As a trade purist, I was personally disappointed in their vote to leave the EU trade bloc, and this decision will likely lead to increased tariffs over time, and possibly other non-tariff protectionist measures. The drop in the British Pound makes Colorado manufactured products much more expensive for the Brits, and Colorado's tourism and other services may also see significant drops until the market settles itself down.

There certainly has been some calling for a re-vote and other fallout since the election, especially from the younger generation, due to the potential loss of freedom to move and work throughout the EU in the future. In my opinion, the major lesson for the United States is that every vote matters in this day and age, and if you feel that globalization is important to our economy, society, and quality of life, it is important that your voice be heard on election day!

kids-connectionManufacturing Day 2016
As the lead organization for Manufacturing Day in Colorado, Manufacturer's Edge is already working to make this Manufacturing Day the biggest and best ever in Colorado. Manufacturing Day started in 2013 as a way to highlight and celebrate manufacturing in North America. Every October, events are held throughout the US, Canada, and Mexico and can include everything from factory tours and workshops to brewery tours and social hours. Manufacturers register their events through the MFG DAY website and participants can browse the events being held in their area to choose which ones they would like to attend.

In addition to encouraging Colorado manufacturers to host events and helping them find resources to assist with planning and promotion, Manufacturer's Edge is also committed to educating future generations on the importance of manufacturing and exposing them to the wide variety of exciting opportunities found in the manufacturing world. To that end, a group called Edge Factor has launched eduFACTOR, a program designed to provide teachers, parents, and students with interactive, multi-media educational tools geared toward children of all ages. To get started, check out this inspirational video at edgefactor.com.

Similarly, the folks from MFG DAY also teamed up with Edge Factor to compile an entire how-to guide for anyone who is interested in hosting an event this October. Take a look!
