This month, we are highlighting Brooke Elston ('19). After graduating from Cabrini, Brooke completed her high school degree at Rosati Kain. She is a current junior at the University of Chicago studying sociology and medicine. Her specific major is History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Medicine, which reflects her interest in social justice issues. She is particularly interested in the ways systemic racism exists in the medical field and has worked as a research assistant in a qualitative study on how patients are being treated at a local hospital.
When she was a student at Cabrini, Brooke especially enjoyed Art. Ms. Heyemer helped her expand her practice by entering her in local competitions. In her spare time, she continues to paint. She does large portraits, often with a political focus. One of her recent paintings of Sonya Massey was even selected to be displayed at the Democratic National Convention. While art will always be a part of her life, after graduation, she plans to attend medical school.
She credits Cabrini with helping her enter new situations with an open mindset. She said, "At Cabrini, I met people from all around the world - Vietnam and Myanmar - it broadened my horizons culturally and stuck with me through high school and college."
