Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month and in honor of this we wanted to highlight an equestrian who made history as the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby: Diane Crump. She had a love of horses and a determination to compete in a sport that had only just lifted the ban on female jockeys. In 1969, she became the first female jockey to compete at a parimutuel track in the U.S., despite having to be escorted to the starting gate by security guards. During her career, Crump faced many adversities, both from the physical risks of racing and doubting words from others. She kept riding despite these obstacles.

“I was going to ride races and no matter what anyone had to say, no matter the criticism-’you’re not good enough, strong enough, cool and calm enough’- it didn’t affect me. I was so passionate about what I did that I 100 percent ignored it. I never, ever let it be a part of me. I got on with it.”
