Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday and often viewed as a second independence day. Although the Emancipation Proclamation officially ended slavery in 1863, it took a long time for freedom to reach every enslaved person. That day finally came on June 19, 1865, after 250,000 people were freed in the state of Texas when the Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. This day was named Juneteenth.
Today, Juneteenth is a day of remembrance and hope. It is a day to promote inclusivity and the end of racial discrimination. You can read more about Juneteenth, its history, and how to celebrate at Juneteenth.com
