Recognizing and Confronting Bias
We all have biases and have come face to face with other people’s biases. But what can we do to recognize and confront any biases within ourselves? What can we do to make a positive impact when faced with other people’s biases? These questions are tough and often the most difficult to address when talking about diversity education and inclusion.

Many places, both inside and outside of the equestrian community, are working to create and foster an inclusive environment. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is working to bring awareness to the competitive equestrian community. They define inclusive language as:

“Inclusive language acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to difference, and promotes equal opportunities. It is trauma-informed, centers on people, acknowledges various identities and shapes thinking.”

USEF suggests that you “C.A.R.E.” when you encounter or observe bias:

Call it out

Acknowledge bias

Report incidents

Educate yourself
