Above, We had visitors at the museum on Friday -- the first since March!
Some came specifically to see the Amistad exhibition, some to see things in general, and head docent Bill LaRoue stopped by to pick up three new puzzles (his partner Jen's favorites by the Italian company Cavallini) from the MUSEUM SHOP. The museum and SHOP are now open by appointment .

Many have tried...
Quite a few of you volunteered to delve into our deep-sea divers' song mystery. We've posted your song suggestions on our facebook page (you'll have to scroll down a few days of posts to find them).
Alas, we have not found the song we're seeking.
Com'on, let's try again:

I'm sure somebody out there can help us...
Several seasons ago, a professional diver visited the museum to see our fantastic deep-sea dive helmet collection. He paused and sang us a song 'known to every diver', he said. But now we cannot find the song (and we have asked a good number of divers)!
Docent Dave Williams remembers some of the words. They go something like this:
We've got twenty pounds upon our heads,
16 pounds upon our feet,
30 pounds around our waist...
We are deep sea divers, and who the xxx are you!

If you know this song, please drop us a line ...

It's SUMMER & we're giving tours to visit inside New London Harbor Lighthouse.

The visit takes around 45 minutes.
Everyone uses hand sanitizer and we all wear masks . NLMS VP and stalwart docent Christina Corcoran was there with a visitor last week, above.

We meet at the lighthouse, then climb 116 steps to the lantern room -- all the while learning about the 260-year history of Harbor Light, one of the oldest lighthouses in the country.

Tours for two people at a time, or one small Covid pod of up-to four, may be arranged by emailing lmaritimedirector@gmail.com .

Suggested donations are $35 for adults, $30 for NLMS members, & $25 for youth 7-to 18 years old. photos: Christina Corcoran

Fishers Island is surrounded by almost a quarter of the seagrass that remains in Long Island Sound.
Although the seagrass in this area is currently in good condition, this important habitat and resource is at risk.

The Fishers Island Seagrass Management (FISM) Coalition was formed in 2017 to protect the seagrass ecosystem around the island. The Coalition is beginning a planning stage to identify locations around the island that would be best suited for Seagrass Management Areas. We are seeking broad input on the siting of these areas from off-island visitors and stakeholders, as well as the island community.

We will be holding a webinar on Monday, August 10th from 6:30-7:30pm for interested stakeholders, and will be using this time to tell you more about the Coalition’s history and goals, the importance of preserving eelgrass and to gather input and answer questions from interested stakeholders.

Questions can be directed to the FISM coordinator, Connor Jones.

Please visit the FISM website, fiseagrass.org, for more information. Use the following link to register for this webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_2i5oJYLmTX2P2OUduQxiRA

Last week, Patricio Montenegro was back to begin to work on the Custom House roof.

This is another temporary fix until we can afford to redo the entire roof including rebuilding the gutters.

Mr. Montenegro currently is relining the old, slightly rotted gutters in an attempt to keep water from ponding and gradually finding its way into the building.

In a letter from 1835 -- one year after the building opened -- the customs collector commented that they'd used buckets to catch water leaking through the roof!
We did that, ourselves, last summer.
