TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
|
|
JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND
|
|
Saturday at 5:00pm
Sunday at 9:00am
Sunday at 11:00am
GUEST PRIEST
This weekend we are blessed to have Fr. Alex Pablo celebrating all of our Masses.
PRACTICE OF CHARITY
Week after week, we read the story of the Church's belief and activity through time. The book is never closed - as the living Church, as a community of believers, we are always in the process of writing a new chapter, and we must constantly renew our understanding of the Gospel message as it pertains to our time. On Sunday we learn, with the early disciples, that we are indeed our brother's keeper, our neighbor's watchman. Even in the smallest of gatherings - as few as two or three together - we are bound by and countable to the greatest of loves. The point of the Gospel is not to gauge when we may cast our brother out; rather, it is to learn how zealous we must be to preserve our unity.
- Start or join a small faith sharing group at our parish.
- This week, check on someone you may have lost touch with.
- Ask a friend to join you in praying for those who may be cut off from hope or help by despair.
We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.
|
|
Please review the Partners in the Gospel materials available to become more familiar with the overall mission of the Church, the goals of this effort, and the process we are undertaking. We ask everyone to pray for this renewal effort.
|
|
Thank you to all who helped host the funeral receptions for Jane Regala and Virgilio Balancio last week - Emmett & Laurie Sullivan, Tara and Haylie Grosso, Mary Torbenson, Connie Lambert and Melinda Lund. You bring light to families going through a very difficult time. God bless you!
If you are interested in helping with the mission of “burying the dead,” we would love to have more hospitality people to help with funeral receptions. Please contact the parish office for more information.

The Knights at SJV have voted Fr. Vu Tran as Knight of the month for the August - September time frame. The council submitted an entry form earlier this year to have Fr. Vu recognized for his support of the council and his overall awesomeness. It is called the Blessed Michael McGivney award and includes up to 140 councils in the state of Washington. The results are in, and Fr. Vu was given a certificate showing that he was a finalist in the voting. Congratulations to Fr. Vu and thanks to him for everything he does for us.
The Family of the Month is Joe and Holly Loutsis. Joe has an important role in our council as Financial Secretary. He keeps track of all the council’s records. Most of you know that his two sons, Nathan and Carter have been altar servers and still help when there is a need. Congratulations to Joe and his family.
This year’s Oktoberfest will take place on October 28. It will have all the fun, food, and excitement as last year’s event. Ticket sales will start after masses in a couple weeks.

Did you know that during Mass, after the Our Father prayer, and doxology, and before the sign of peace, the priest prays a short but meaningful prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will...”
It’s a humble prayer on behalf of the church, to ask the Lord to look away, and instead to focus on the collective faith of the church. It would be like St. Peter saying to the Lord: “Depart from me, O Lord, for I am a sinner.”
The faith of the Church mentioned in this prayer refers to all the faithful of the church; members of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, whose reality includes and transcends the local assembly. The Universal Church cuts across space and time. Thus, we at Mass in our local church also depend upon the faith of the entire Church Militant (every parishioner at Mass everywhere on earth) and the faith of the entire Church Triumphant (the angels and saints at Mass in heaven). That is why we worship as a community of faith and every person’s prayer and loving service are accounted for.
When this prayer is said: “Look not on our sins but on the faith of the church,” we humbly admit that as individuals, we are not strong enough on our own, but we need the grace of faith and prayers from the entire church.
The faith of the church collectively, can help deflect the Lord’s judgment on our sins and the sins of the souls in Purgatory awaiting the completion of their purification; all of us together need God to look not on our sins but on the faith of the church combined. We humbly ask the Lord to look favorably upon the faith of the Saints, Holy Men and Women, and martyrs, those who are living or have gone before us; those who have been faithful and are wonderful examples. We ask the Lord to look to Mother Mary, St. Joseph, St. John Vianney, All Saints, and our ancestors.
Why is it important to ask the Lord to look not at our sins but on the faith of the church? So that we too may not focus on our sins and the sins of one another with a spirit of condemnation. We also need to look at the faith of the Church. Because we can’t be asking the Lord to look away from individual sins while we are not doing the same. And secondly, every prayer and loving service are accounted for, and aids the Church in Her Mission to make disciples for Christ. Let us pray, Dear Lord, look not on our sins but on the faith of the church. As we ask you to do so, may you give us the grace to do the same. Through the intercession of Mother Mary, St Joseph, St John Vianney, and all the Angels and Saints. Amen.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION CLASSES STARTING THIS MONTH
|
|
RACIAL JUSTICE AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
As we as a people of faith continue to struggle with the issue of racism in society and in the church, it appears that, while there is a unanimous recognition that racism Is sinful or evil, there is little shared agreement about what racism is. Also surprisingly, there is almost never an attempt to provide a Biblical or theological underpinning for the rejection of racism. In addition, in both Christianity and Catholicism in America, there is rarely a consistent emphasis or recommended course of action for combatting racism. As a result, for many of the unchurched, the Catholic Church appears to be largely indifferent to the issue of racism and social justice. However, both individually and as the people of God as a whole, we can deepen our understanding of racism, repent of racism, begin to actively promote racial justice, and so fulfill our mission of imitating Christ in the world. One of the ways to do this is to directly confront racism through study.
Each Thursday evening at 7:00 P.M. starting on September 21, 2023, we will examine the relationship of the Catholic Church to racism. The class is online using Zoom; all sessions are recorded and will be available on the SJV Kirkland Adult Faith Formation Channel on YouTube. The class will focus on Fr. Bryan Massingale’s book Racial Justice and the Catholic Church, (available as a Kindle edition from Amazon or as a free one-hour loan from Internet Archive) along with Conor Kelly’s book, Racism & Structural Sin (available as a Kindle edition from Amazon). To register, please call the parish office or sign up at the welcome table in the narthex.
STUDY OF THE PATRISTIC TRADITION
As Catholics, our faith has been preserved and handed down to us over the course of almost 2,000 years. A critical role in preserving and further articulating the faith of Jesus and the Apostles was played by the Patristic Fathers and Mothers during the first eight centuries after Christ’s death and resurrection. Yet today, despite Vatican II’s call to return to the Patristic tradition, we’ve virtually lost sight of the Patristic Fathers and their contributions to our faith. Often, the best we can say is, “I’ve heard of her (or him).” Join us as we study the Patristic tradition and, in the process, learn more about our faith and who we are as Catholics. The class will be held remotely via Zoom on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 PM starting on September 18, 2023. The course text is Mike Aquilina’s The Fathers of the Church, 3rd Edition, available in a Kindle edition from Amazon. To register, please call the parish office or sign up at the welcome table in the narthex.

"YOU ARE THE VINE, WE ARE THE BRANCHES"
GALA DINNER & AUCTION
Saturday, November 4 after the 4:00pm Mass
|
|
We are looking forward to a fun night of good food and good friends – all while supporting the works of SJV.
Thank you to everyone who has donated the corks for decorations, we have plenty now.
Our auction helps to fund everything we do at SJV from spiritual nourishment of Mass and bible studies to bodily nourishment through Sunday donuts, Lazarus House sandwich making, and St. Vincent de Paul. We need your help – not just to come to the auction and bid on items, but also to help procure items for everyone to bid on. A successful auction requires about 300 items. We currently have less than 100 items that have been procured. PLEASE try to procure at least one item from a business you frequent or own or have a friend who owns. We need to get these in as the procurement deadline is OCTOBER 9! Thank you to those of you who have procured items and turned them in. It is invaluable to have them early and see what we can look forward to bidding on.
Procurement letters, forms, and a “tip” sheet are available in the Narthex at the Welcome Table.
We will be sharing some of these items as displays in the Narthex in October. Looking forward to a lovely evening on November 4!
Not sure you want to buy a ticket to the Gala? We are looking for volunteers at every level, so those interested in joining an auction committee can contact Ann V. at avandewark@sjvkirkland.org or sign up at the Parish Picnic or after Masses in late September. If you need some guidance on where you would best fit, Ann can help you decide where you would most enjoy volunteering, and make sure you’re comfortable!
We will be having a planning meeting this Wednesday, September 6 at 5:30pm in the parish office and Wednesday, September 20 at 5:30pm in the Social Hall. ALL ARE INVITED AND WELCOME!
