I met Karen Tui Boyes more than twenty years ago, when we spoke together on many continents with the K-12 International School convenings. In fact, Karen, Bena Kallick and I were together at an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2013 when we first conceived of GlobalMindED based on Karen's groundbreaking work with her company, Spectrum Education, and our collective experiences. Karen has been the inspiration behind GlobalMindED because she is the embodiment of a generous leader who embraces, creates opportunities for and appreciates those from all cultures and backgrounds. You are a global leader of Maori descent. How did your indigenous roots shape the person you have become today?
Growing up in an era when Maoris were encouraged to be 'white' I learned little of my culture as a child and none of my indigenous language. Now that the Maori culture is celebrated, I have learned so much more. The main influence of my culture is the understanding that in my tribe (Ngai Tahu) the women were given the right to speak before men. This is the only tribe that allows this. It has given me incredible strength as a woman to push forward towards my dreams and shatter the 'glass ceiling' that many haven't permeated YET.
You are an education leader, a teacher, an entrepreneur, a wife and a mother. How do you balance these various roles?
I'm not sure there is such a thing as balance. I believe in 'being present.' This means when I am at home, I'm totally 'with' my family and when I'm at work I have my focus there. With that being said, it is not always that easy. I have developed family and work systems to ensure I can be more focused. I am clear on my order of importance: Self-care is first, as I cannot pour from an empty cup. My second priority is my husband and ensuring our relationship is strong. Third come our children and helping them to develop into strong, responsible, independent adults. Then my business flows from there. The more I practice self-care, the better I can be in all other areas of my life.
In your travels to more than 21 countries, what makes you the most hopeful about the future?
The youth of today makes me so hopeful - their ability to think, break traditions, be creative, innovative, and problem solve is inspiring. Those of us in mid and later life can learn from the ingenuity and leadership of these courageous leaders. We need to clear the space for them and let them lead!
What is the one bit of advice you give to young girls and boys who can learn to be with strong women as colleagues, as spouses, as siblings, as government leaders?
As Oscar Wilde said "Be yourself - everyone else is taken." Take risks, give new things a go, make mistakes and learn from them. That is how we learn. Be a lifelong learner and develop yourself as well as those around you, especially those who are different from you. During times like this where we face unprecedented global challenges, remember that we are all connected and will rise beyond our current difficulty. We are all in this together.

Since 2015, we have served more than 300 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

The ILO Skills Challenge Innovation Call will recognise and support the development of solutions that aim to address the different forms and dimensions of skills mismatch.

Entertainment For Change creates original song and dance (#SDGGROOVE) to educate young people on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Like any meaningful social change, the original song and dance is a collaborative effort between more than 20 singers, dancers, writers and choreographers. Lauded vocalists Natalie Weiss and Antonio Cipriano lend their voices to the powerful lyrics, while each SDG is danced by performers of all calibers.

Join the #NeedHerScience Campaign that is aimed at addressing journal-level gender bias. For decades, studies have demonstrated gender bias in publishing. This may occur at various stages in the process, including at the level of the
journals. The equitable inclusion of women editors at every level is long overdue. Addressing journal gender bias starts at the top.
The goal: To raise awareness about gender bias in publishing and share with stakeholders, including journal editors and owners, the overall number of scientists, healthcare professionals and others who have taken the pledge. The pledge can be taken anonymously. Educators and others are encouraged to take the pledge and share information about this issue with colleagues and trainees.
